Why are there no players?
It averages around 200 to 300 players. Where is the fanbase?! Can't be that they are all gone. Wanted to come back to this game because of good ol times with some friends but there are only empty servers or a few half full with horrible ping. When did it die and why?^^ Had so many good memories qq

I always get into almost full servers and this game hasn't died. There are still a fair amount of people playing it for a forgotten game. I don't know why a huge part of the fanbase dissapeared.

I understand that it used to be a little better but the game is still enjoyable for me. I get low ping and good servers.

You might say "but you only have 2 hours" but I used to be a NS2 player.

Basically, since the devs have been "back" they managed to annoy the comp community, annoy the modding community (ns2+ mod drama) then they segregated the community by adding 2 tabs, they made a shedload of "rookie" features like HP bars (cause you know, FPS games have HP bars? I dunno) made sneaky changes and didnt tell anyone (hit model drama)...

Apparently they thought the game needed a lot of rookie changes to appeal to the masses, while they forgot why their core gamers stayed in the first place.

Theres a few core servers left though, about 5-6 per day or so.

Don't forget each year games die a little with the advent of brand new titles. To be fair i hadn't touched this game in a while even though i enjoyed it so much, some of it was life, some of it was other games.

I can't say i've noticed a lot of changes, though i was surprised by the HP bar. Though the game still has the same issue of nobody wants to play aliens, every server i join the marine team is full and the alien team is 1-2 players down and with 3 bots.

Is this game still worth buying as a new player and huge fan of RTS/FPS(/AVP), or will it be too hard to get into the game, get good, and find other players? I'm in NA.

Game was great from 2013 till beginning of 2016. Now big parts of the community have either left the game or not supporting the view of developers. There is still some populated servers so you find most likely always a server with players on. When you are a new player you can join more server, also such with only newcomers called "rookie only". Some may support this idea, I highly suggest to only play for 5-10 hours on rookie only and then go to normal ns2 servers as you learn nothing from "rookie only" servers. Oh and if you like to play with lots of players, more than the game was designed for, check out the "Arcade" tab. This were me and others hang out, isolated from the rest but still having fun with others

I would say get it and enjoy it whilst it's still around. The game will only get quieter and quieter the longer time goes on. It still has players, plus you'll always find a game in progress if you use the "play now" function that throws you right into the action.
