For one, game doesn't support free race/faction choice like in Starcraft. It's always TSF versus Kharaa. Never TvT od KvK. Adding additional faction would mean choosing this conception; either allowing for more faction variation in same match (adding TvP and KvP) which means tremendous work on balancing it all, or making it so all 3 factions appear in every game somehow - which will obviously change a lot. Meaning necesserity of change in existing factions, too.
Then there's the fact Pr*t*ss would require lot of stuff to be added in game, equal to size of entire faction. Art and models, coding - this requires lots of effort go make...
...and it is not made easier by, perhaps, main issue/question. "How it will differ from both existing factions"? Both gameplay mechanics and art style must be vastly different. This greatly limits what can be done, while increasing difficulty of such work.
All in all, adding any third faction/race would be near impossible within NS2, and many won't really need or even accept those newcomers. Most you can hope for is "mysterious artifact" with cool functionality at some maps, and even this would require sizable efforts to add and new maps with this won't see much play soon, either
You could DEFINITELY have a "protoss" in Natural Selection 2, but the developers just never bothered trying to put 3 races in... or allowing a free choice of race. Anything is possible, anyone can build it. Building takes time though and all the time has been focused on the asymmetrical always humans vs aliens approach here. I'd probably go to the furthest extreme with varied possibilities and let people mix-and-match human / alien / "protoss" all on the same team XD
Lord knows there's been enough Starcraft custom maps that let you do that kind of thing.
There will be three factions:
- Trans-System Authority (Marines)
- Zurvanochian Consolidation (Progenitors)
- Bacterium Mutations (Aliens)
