Even though there is no casual mode, the game starts with only a few enemies which you'll probably finish off pretty easy. Every time you complete a map, the Challenge Rating increases a bit (by how much, depends on how well you performed).
The higher the challenge rating, the more enemies you'll have to fight and they will also get tougher. But despite that, the whole game is designed to be a casual experience. So even if you die, you won't lose what you've achieved so far. Instead you keep all your unlocked perks, stat increases and your score. In fact, you'll even keep the score you gained on a map if you can't complete it. And since your score unlocks new perks and upgrades your stats you'll automatically get stronger, even if you fail.
Hope that helps and and if you decide to give it a try, let us know how you like it
