It was probably too high for a firing solution due to the position before switching off the AP.
Oh, I think I get what you're saying. I've been switching off my AP at the start, no matter where my gyro angle was at the time. I figured that simply turned off its brain and it would just first straight ahead. But I need to first move the dial to zero degrees and only THEN turn off the TDC, right?
Set the speed or AOB to 0. This way it does not calculate a lead angle.
Set the Heading dial to 0 (or 180 for aft-shot). This points the torpedo straight in front or aft.
Gyro angle should stay at 0 (or 180) wherever you look with the periscopes or UZO. Then fire when you prefer.
If you want to fire a salvo shot then you need to set target length and distance accordingly for the spread angle.
And depth obviously. So yeah, you can't do without the device.
