Firing a torpedo straight ahead without angle tracking
Sometimes I'd like to aim straight ahead (straight in front of my sub's nose) without using the TDC. I'd like to get a dead ahead shot without any calculated arc in the torpedo's path. But when I turn off angle tracking, it won't let me fire the torpedo. Am I doing something wrong?

You need to get the gyro angle on the TDC to zero to fire a staight line.
It was probably too high for a firing solution due to the position before switching off the AP.

I,VE PLAYED LOTS OF SUB GAMES -- NEVER USED TDC - POINT, AND SHOOT, FASTER - EASIER ETC. IF YOUR IN THE STATES PHONE ME - WE,LL TALK -

Oh, I think I get what you're saying. I've been switching off my AP at the start, no matter where my gyro angle was at the time. I figured that simply turned off its brain and it would just first straight ahead. But I need to first move the dial to zero degrees and only THEN turn off the TDC, right?

I think you can turn off AP tracking and change the heading/bearing manually on the lower left part of the tdc to get the gyro to 0... Or the gyro wheel itself may be interactive?!

if you turn off angle tracking the firing command will only be possible when you're controlling the TDC itself.

I guess I don't understand after all. So there's no way to turn off the TDC, and then just point the nose of the sub straight at (or some manually estimated distance ahead of) my target and then press the space bar and have the torpedo just go straight ahead, with no arc? Seems like that should be possible to do, even if it's not an optimal way to play.

Set the angle tracking to Off. This disconnects the periscopes/UZO movement.
Set the speed or AOB to 0. This way it does not calculate a lead angle.
Set the Heading dial to 0 (or 180 for aft-shot). This points the torpedo straight in front or aft.
Gyro angle should stay at 0 (or 180) wherever you look with the periscopes or UZO. Then fire when you prefer.

If you want to fire a salvo shot then you need to set target length and distance accordingly for the spread angle.

And depth obviously. So yeah, you can't do without the device.
