What speed are you going at? And do you know how to locate the convoy?
First, make sure all your tanks are empty for max speed (You should be getting about 18 knots like that). When you spawn in, look around on the bridge to make sure the convoy isn't in sight and you know the weather. After that, dive if you don't see it to 12-20 meters and find your target using the Hydrophone. Simply go to the magnetic heading the target is at on the hydrophone.
That should be getting you to your target pretty quickly. I don't know about the briefing or what it means, but this always works well for me.
Btw. I'm a noob at this game, and I'm not into uboat porn like some hardcore people, I just like WW2 in general and really enjoyed the movie " Das Boot " + I've played a bit of Silent Hunter back in the day... don't really remember much.
You can turn your engines off while submerged so you have absolutely nothing getting in the way of your hydrophone. Once you get the hang of it it shouldn't take you long.
And the hydrophone only works submerged.
One trick that works due to a bug at the moment - when scanning for enemies, look with the corner of your screen. You can see further, especially through fog, at the left and right edges of your screen. This doesn't work with binoculars or through the periscope, only with the naked eye.
Before you come complaining about can't hear a damn on hydrophone, make sure you set the gain (the knob on top right) to 3 or 4, or you won't hear a thing.
also remember to exclude the sound you hear from directly behind you (about +- 20 degrees), that's your own propeller noise.
