There are two big challenges you face.
1. The time it takes to dive is longer because you must flood the ballast, close the ballast tanks, and manage the dive planes yourself. It takes time to do each thing. With a second pair of hands, it is faster.
2. Depth keeping is a big challenge. You can keep depth if you keep your speed constant, but any changes to speed will affect your depth-keeping. This is something you have to pay close attention to when you are maneuvering at periscope depth. The danger is if you surface while a destroyer is stalking you. So, having a person to manage your depth makes it easier to stay at periscope depth.
You can play these single and do well once you have mastered the various stations, which takes a day or two of play and reading the manual.
So, my advice is to make a friend. Otherwise, understand you won't be as survivable otherwise, but yes, you sure can play solo, and yes you can succeed alone.
Their playing of earlier versions of submarine Multiplayer games should have told them that.. I remember waiting in lobbies for a very long time trying to Multiplay with others.. soon abandoning the effort in favor of single play.. counting on yet another 3rd party VOICE system like discord, teamspeak, steam etc also hampers the amount of players.. put it in the game.
All I do is play WolfPack "solo" as well..
Playing solo just takes practice.. they are working on adding features to make it "easier".. The game was designed with a very limited audience in their vision.. the blinders are coming off and will be more accessible to make it a success in the future. Adding "singleplayer" to the sales page will boost the amount of players, that will eventually try the Multiplayer aspect I would also assume.
