What version windows are you running. Is it build 1703 by any chance?

Thats not good, there has been a tun of issues with that update. But lets see if this is what is causing the issue. Is your documents folder on your regular hard drive or is it configured to one drive? Also, locate the the Realms Of Magic folder in your documents section, and do a properties check. If your seeing something like 1 to 2 mb instead of 6+, then were going to have a bit of work to do, not just to make it so this game works, but to prevent a LOT of data loss you may not know has happened yet. It's called file ghosting, which is when files appear in the application and even have the correct byte size, but go to the folder it's supposed to be in, and you find nada. If you use file history, check that folder too, as you may see 300+ icons in the program itself, but propertise check shows 2mb and nothing in it as well.
Word of advice, never set anything to save on one drive. Put backups you paste there yourself, but never rely on it because the moment you close an application thats writing to it, many a times not only do you lose the file, you lose the whole folder it was in as well.

its not one drive i disabled that cause i found it annoying. It is stored on a second hard drive with all of my games. I cant seem to find it in documents but when i look in steamapps it says the size is 1.04GB

Thats the program itself. When you run it and create your first character, it creates a folder in your documents section called Realms Of Magic, and in that folder a folder named 76561198160631354. Try doing a file search for 76561198160631354. If your not finding it, that is the most likely issue of the game locking up. If you by any chance have Terraria, and get the same issue, I highly recomment going back to build 1607. There is a program from microsoft that will stop it from updating again to 1703. Here is the link to that program. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window

scroll down to the show or hide windows update program and run it once your back to 1607. Hide the 1703 so it doesnt go back again. That version is stubborn and will come back worse than any virus I have ever known lol.

Make sure to make an image backup. Also, check your windows install drive to see if even a windows.old exists. If not, 1703 may have been updated too long. Good luck. Let me know how it works.
