Can't Find a Very important shield
I'm doing a quest for the morthal Jarl to find his shield. I've checked all of the potential places and couldn't find it, then I summoned the shield with console commands, and the game didn't count it. Help.

because the mission script doesn't want A shield, it wants THE shield.

also not to nitpick but finding Hrolfdir's shield is from jarl Igmund of the Reach, not Morthal, that's jarl Ravencrone of Hjaalmarch, who has no shield quest...

since you're already willing to cheat, just do 'setstage favor157 15' which will make it as though you have it, and talk to the jarl...

When you need to find an item during a quest to deliver it to the questgiver, do not use console commands as it will give you the base item. For the quest you need the item as it is referenced in the quest.

If you're having problems with a quest check the Unofficial Elder Scroll Pages[en.uesp.net]

Is there anything I add to the setstage, or do I just put that in exactly?

Normally the quest should have a map marker ...

no that's the whole invocation, setstage <questID> <stage>, why did it not work?

no. oh god have i messed up my whole game?

Messing with console commands can break ur game easily - if u use it make sure u know exactly what effects ur commands have

Reload a save to before you entered console commands if you are anxious about continuing. Check the mission log as the location of the shield may be listed in the description.

you haven't messed up anything... they're being paranoid and making you paranoid. did the console command make a pop-up appear that told you to "completed:" blah blah now go talk to the jarl, or not?

listen we get people in here parroting whatever they've heard over the time they've spent here... not all of them are trustworthy... altbert is cautious but knowledgeable, speedy is too, the others I can't speak of, they may or may not be...

I'm not saying in this particular thread, but one setstage on a simple fetch quest does nothing, it basically moves the quest along as if you did it. that's it. that's all it does. you can do all quests standing in front of people who give them to you, never actually moving... it's boring as hell, and why are you playing if that's what you want, but the point is, you can... but entirely "safe". these are just variables. Were it something involved, complex, multi-linked event quests that the outcome was used later, or was a user quest item, that's a different thing, but this? this is a mcguffin fetch for hearthfire purchasing rights. it's as linear and non-important as quests get. It has literally 3 stages: given, found, returned. https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Dungeon_Delving_(Jarl_-_Hagravens)

tell us the name of the quest, if it's not find Hrolfdir's shield, you basically moved the stage for that one, without having started it, or having already completed it, both are fine... no harm either way, it is either done already or was ignored because it wasn't running, and will start at the beginning when you get it.

so breathe... everything's fine.

but that brings up the question, if you didn't get a "completed" message, what quest ARE you on?

course as you were told you can always just reload something earlier; there's normally compass markers for these things that will lazily walk you right to the target, did you have too many quests active and you turned some off maybe?

IF I recall correctly The Markarth Daddy's Shield is a Misc Quest. If for some reason they unclicked markers at the Topmost Misc Level instead of the Shield Quest Line level it would unmark all misc quests at once.

Just speculating why it was unmarked. May be true, May Not.

I had no markers for this quest

@ Death Approaches

Thanks for the compliment! Yes, I'm cautious. If I can't explain or prove something, even after testing, I keep away from explicit pronunciations.

In addition to my post #2, do not use the console command setstage without knowing what a certain stage will do. Quest stages will not always be strictly linear. In case of small radiant quest stages may be linear, but you will have to check to prevent issues during the quest, or sometimes even later in the game.

Nevermind. I managed to complete the quest. A marker appeared, and I now have a lovely house in Markarth
