Skyrim's cities problem (a more old school style discussion)
Skyrim's cities is somewhat of a problem, not as big as a problem as the starfield cities and the npcs with less personality then cardboard (a problem about starfield that I may mention in a starfield discussion).

Master Neloth's youtube video on ranking cities in skyrim, his video influenced this discussion and I would recommend you watch his video.

I will put each problem down:
1. Riften is a f*cking disaster. You have thieves who rob the people above and dont get me started on maven black briar, who supports these thieves there and has more influence then the jarl. Then the jarl has no effort to stop the thieves and just lets them roam around riften. There is also poverty, where there are many beggars in riften.
2. Markarth is even more worse then riften. I mean there is many people doing labor, and the city has to deal with the forceworn, and they have no effort to stop, as they let people just get murdered, and they could've asked skyrim to help against them. The city of markarth also has the silver bloods, who cause the city to keep being horrible, similar to the black briars from riften.
3. Windhelm is can be described in one word, racistism. The nords just force the dark elves into a poor alleyway and the argonians arent even allowed entry into the city. The city is ruled by ulfric stormcloak, who hates dunmer, argonian, khajiit, and the thalmor (which is actually a good thing).
4. The four smaller cities are so lackluster, and they had more potential then copy and pasting buildings and lacking an identity, (cities of the north fixes these issues) and even the jarls "palace" is just the same in all the cities. There is a few minor quests, but for the rest, a loss of potential.

However I would argue the 2 good cities of skyrim are solitude and whiterun. (I dont have time to explain why but I am sure you know why.

"Skyrim and Starfield both have the same Achille's Heel. The engine. The only difference being the old school writing quality of Skyrim...and the...'new school' of audience projection over story projection. Wooden engine...wooden hype...wooden writing...wooden NPCs...no one gets wood for products from petrified companies...petrified companies die off." - Peryite

Skyrim's cities have two major problems, bad writing and a horribly outdated engine which limits their size to two dozens NPCs.

1. You might want to study history, multiple cities in history were thieves ran the city.
2. Again you may want to study history, this sounds perfectly like thousands of cities during real history.
3. Yes, your point? This again happened throughout history.
4. This is your only good point, and can be ascribed to them running out of time because of problems with the civil war, and other aspects they considered more important.
Just to clarify, I don't condone racism and abuse, but then again I don't pretend it never happened.

You acknowledge what happened in the past, and move on, just because something has happened does not mean it has to define what is going to happen. You just have to be aware it has happened in the past, why, and keep an eye open to prevent it repeating.

i dont understand the point of this thread.
comparing skyrim cities to starfields, which lack personality, are you implying that these cities in skyrim are bad because they have issues? if anything, all of the issues described are realistic and add character rather than subtract enjoyment. windhelm wouldnt be memorable without the things described here.

Is this an argument for not becoming a thane in some of those cities that make your character a part of the corrupt ruling class? Or for not chasing the pick pocketing and 1k bounty in each hold achievements?
Or for not joining the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood?
Merchants in both Solitude and Whiterun will buy your skooma, and with the right perk, even your stolen goods.

Is someone really saying this game is bad because it is not politically correct?

No it isnt, as this is is from the point of view of an average citizen of this city, and about the "anti dark brotherhood and thieves guild" I am not telling you to not do evil playthroughs. (im actually doing one right now)

Also merchants buying skooma is just a game mechanic in all cities, and your stolen goods goes the same as skooma.
