Anniversary Edition is a bundle of previously released Creation Club content. It does not change the game version, so you will be buying Skyrim Special Edition in either case.

If you want those CC items in to your game, then buy Anniversary Edition DLC as well. However, you might want to experience Skyrim first without them and ad them later for a second run.

Or third, fourth.... tenth... people keep returning to this game.
Yes I think you should get the Anniversary Edition as well it comes with weapons and armour from oblivion and morrowind and it also adds goblins and nix hound from morrowind and oblivion and also adds new areas including a oblivion gate that takes you to mehrunes dagons realm.

If you're wondering if the DLC is worth to get, perhaps you can check this wiki page; https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Creation_Club

It displays all Creation Club content that got endorsed by the company. Aside from Survival Mode, Saints & Seducers, Rare Curios and Fishing (all are provided with the base game, Special Edition already!) all of the content listed in the list will be given in the DLC.

If you find some that you want to have in your game, you can purchase the DLC. Do not worry about those that you do not like. You can tick these off from the "DLC" tab in the game properties. Steam won't download them. Thus, all of these items (except those four aforementioned Creation Club content) in the list are optional.

I have a related question. I bought Skyrim in 2011. My version was unlisted by Steam and not updated to the Anniversary edition like one would expect. Does that mean I would have to re-buy the game for the QoL add-ons? That seems like an unfair punishment for OG players. Any other OGs here? What did you do?
I definitively won't buy it again, even if it's only three bucks. (I already bought it twice. The physical copy and then again on Steam.) The sheer audacity would stop me from playing any Bethesda game ever again. I do have principles.

People who owned skyrim 2011 release could get special edition for free if they had all dlcs on the 2011 release.

If you had owned the LE by the time of October of 2016 you would have gotten SE for free, but they are separate games, not an upgrade.

AE is also a DLC for SE, and that was never free.

Hi! Thanks for answering. Yes, I'm aware they are separate editions. The 2011 version is still in my library, so I can play it. It just seemed strange that they wouldn't just patch the original version. Unfortunately, I must have missed the time frame, in which to claim the new edition, because I never got it. Well, doesn't matter. It's still playable. Thank you for your time.

The game was rewritten for Special Edition. It isn't something a simple patch could do. It uses a different version of the game engine.
