When 1.6 came out it broke a LOT of stuff, but most of that has been fixed for awhile now. Since you'll be downloading Skyrim new, it will be on the latest version, the actual AE DLC will barely affect mods if at all, as the Update it what actually caused problems.
You'll find a lot of people (incorrectly) refer to Skyrim 1.6 as AE, so it's best just to look at version number when downloading mods. Skyrim is currently at 1.6.1170, so if you download any mod that relies on SKSE, and version number, only use mods that are 1.6 or higher, don't use 1.5 mods.
it's frequently on sale for $9.99 anyway, if you don't want to buy it now. not a decision you have to make before Monday, anyway.
So, the only question is, do you want the DLC containing the 70 Creation Club mods or not?
If that's not a priority for you, just get the base game for $4 - you can always add the AE DLC at a later date.
If I was dusting off an old save so I could do the AE content, I would be a little more hesitant.
