Having fun but what different class
So I finally bought this and made a typical two-handed sword fighter - vanilla. Its fun but I really want to make a spell-slinging mage who uses a 1 handed sword and maybe wears light armor at least until i really build my mage abilities up.
I have heard that different races do magic better? Is that true? Is the character I want to make realistic and what race would that fit?
Thanks!

When you create a character and can choose different races…read the descriptions for each one. Some have better ability for magic than others.

That said…the strongest magic using character I ever played was a Nord, who aren’t traditionally known for magic use.

Wow, thanks, that was quick! Why have I not noticed the descriptions! lol! I'll better pay attention next time I make a toon
If you want to play a spellsword, I'd recommend theses mods:

Ordinator for a lot more perks that allow you to specialize more. In particular, there are perks to increase damage on one handed weapon attack following casting a spell, and vice versa.

Odin and Apocalypse for a huge number of spells added.

You could do a spellblade build that uses and melee and spell in your left hand.
Conjuration has a spell that conjures a sword that deals the same damage as daedric. I think it's apprentice level so you can use a sword and level your conjuration, then once you get apprentice conjuration you can switch to using the conjure sword.

High Elf is probably the best spellcaster. They start with 50 extra magicka and their power gives 2500% extra magicka regen for 60s. They also start with higher stats in a lot of the magic skills.

Awesome - that sounds like what I want. Appreciate it!
No race is better than any other, not in Skyrim, but some have powers that might help more than others, but it terms of what you can do with magic. every race is the same.

High Elf is a good choice for a general mage, but Breton and Dunmer are also good choices, Bretons have a passive magic resist, and their power gives them 50% magic Absorption for one minute, If you combine that with the Atronach Stone, you can be 100% immune to all magic for one minute. Some of the toughest enemies in the game are mages. That combo lets you have basically a whole minute to pummel them while they can't do anything to you.

At high level though, all characters will be relatively the same, my Dunmer Caster can do just as well as any other, there is no major racial advantage that sets one far enough another to matter.
I'm a stealth, dagger, mage, wid pocketing poisons.

Can kill, wid dagger or Conjured creature or magic or jus drop poisons in a pocket, till they die.
Call myself Blademage

Can even kill a dragon, on Legendary mode wid daggerz :-)

Ok, my #1 recommendation when playing Skyrim on pc, is get some mods.
I cannot believe some people play this game ''vanilla''..
The MUST have are the graphic overhauls (Skyrim 202X on Nexus, get all files on the mod's page)
AI overhaul for NPC's, so they react like real people.
Anything else you like.

Vanilla Skyrim is like a 8/10 game.
Modded Skyrim is a 1000/10 game.
It's a major league above when picking good mods.

I mean, why ride a bicycle when you have a Benz in your garage?!?
Yes some races have better magic abilties these are high elf or altmer there have 50 bonus magicka I think and bretons they have magic resitances and I think that dark elves are suited for all classes magic stealth and warrior so they should be good for it aswell.
I always play a heavy armor tank with a one-handed weapon. Left hand loads magical armor like stoneflesh, ebonyflesh, etc. and follows that with a conjuration spell.

Destruction spells are pretty much a waste of time. Many NPCs can take several 60 point fireball hits and keep on truckin'.

NPCs from mods almost always have high health stats, too.

I think it's more about the way to manage situations... and race can advance through skills and stats the same way, but not every race is well built for the same situations. (example, dark elfs have can handle fire attacks better, which make it useful if you play a vampire.)

Think about the play style you want and try some things.

Some races are marginally better at certain playstyles.
Unless you are minmaxing just play the race you like best.
You can get along perfectly fine without even using any of the racial boni.

Here is the dumb question of the universe - where do i get the mods? Kind of new to the mod thing (admitted vanilla player ... shame on me).
I heard that on the game's page there is supposed to be a workshop tag and I can't find it.
Thanks!
Illusionist dagger wielding manipulator is my favorite. Most fights you make someone else do for you, mop up the stragglers by striking from the shadows. It's just a fun playstyle. It sucks against dragons, especially if you decide to stick to roleplaying. Would have to avoid some fights, or employ help of bystanders, guards, or temporary followers you hire to do the job for you. Watching entire camps turn on each other while you sit in the corner and eat a sandwich is just too funny.

Nexusmods is the biggest source. There is also Wabbajack if you want to download an entire collection of mods without any clue how to fix anything. If it's well curated you should not have to fix anything anyway.
You can also find a manal modlist and put in the work.
Or you can just browse and add mods, that will be a learning experience.
