Weird Save Game Bug
Hello! My game recently came to what seems to be a halt because after defeating a Storm Dragon at the Whiterun Stormcloak Camp, whenever I load my game I spawn inside the commander's tent and if I walk too far away and save on another file the game won't load at all if I try to load that second file, I can only load the first file and always spawn inside the tent even if I try saving somewhere else nearby. And at least some of the grass textures aren't loading. I just wanted to check here if anyone has any experience with this but I guess either one/some of my mods went crazy or my save file has been corrupted? I'm guessing the problem is with the save file, I didn't get any messages or warnings though? Or, could this be a consequence of having too many mods (I had 250 which I didn't think was too many?) And how could I protect myself against corrupt saves if that's the problem? Would backups work or no? I have the nexus mod crash logger sse but it didn't produce anything...probably since the game didn't actually crash. Oh, and the game looks fine when I start a new game but my old load game is just as screwed.

Did you ever remove any mods and continue playing? This is one of the types of things that it is possible to happen. For the complete information regarding this, see:

You CANNOT Remove Mods Mid-Playthrough

Also, save frequently, using manual saves, so you can roll back should something bugs out - reloading an older save is the first and best option when encountering any bug. And you can move excess saves to a folder on your PC so that they are not all accumulating in the game's save folder.

The number of mods has nothing to do with this, so you are fine on that score - though it is possible that some individual mod may be causing the issue. If rolling back to an earlier save does not fix the problem, as crash loggers are pretty useless, follow this general outline to troubleshoot your issue if you suspect it to be a mod:

Good luck!

1. Don't uninstall mods mid-game.
2. Don't use quicksaves. Do not rely on autosaves.
3. The mod limit is 254 for "full" plugins (ESM and ESP), and an additional 4096 for "light" plugins (ESL or ESL-flagged).

Hmm, I didn't uninstall any mods mid-game though? I was doing some mod adjustments through the in-game MCM close to the time the problem happened and maybe the game didn't like that? The autosaves weren't even working in my game for some reason but I'll make a point to avoid quicksaving.

Did you install anything?

Nope, I didn't.

So you're saying that you haven't done anything. No new mods, no experiments with the console, no removed mods?

Fine, then what did you configure?

You are using an unstable mod, likely to do with animations, more likely you didn't install a requirement for something.

That would cause a T-pose or a CTD.

Last thing I configured was some MCM settings for the Hunterborn mod. Btw you mentioned that I shouldn't rely on autosaves...which I learned the hard way 😅, but I should avoid quicksaves as well? Is there something buggy about them?

That shouldn't cause such problems. Was there anything else?

It's the same mechanism. For a full save, the game is paused, but a quick/autosave is just a snapshot on the fly. This can lead to stuff not being properly recorded.

Nothing that comes to mind, I'm afraid. I fought the dragon, had to reload a couple times since one of my mods is Dragon War which makes them stronger, won, quit the game to do other things, and when I reloaded is when I found my character in the commander's tent instead of outside and found that using any new saves would either put me back in the tent or stop the game from loading completely if I loaded a save made too far from the area.

Ah, I see! That makes sense. Thanks for telling me!

Sorry to say, but in this case, it seems like the accumulation of various glitches has finally led to savegame corruption.

Oh, I remembered something. What happens if you start a new game or load another save, then load the afflicted save?

Yeah, wish there was a way to know what those glitches were. As for your question,...I wouldn't know, I deleted it as I'm setting up for a new game. 😅 Thanks for all your help though! At least this time I know not to screw around with autosaves.

There's a function in the engine fixes to trigger a full save by hitting F5, you might want to use that. The autosaves, well, use them as a fallback in case of a crash.

Thank you! I'll do that.
