ESLify
I launched the eslify program and I can only eslify a few mods.
I'm at 264 esp+esm and unsure how to lower it with other means

I don't know what you used to convert standard plugins into Lite plugins, but it is something (as are most things regarding editing files and records) best done manually. As for any remaining plugins that are not marked as .esl files (and be aware that some will still retain the .esp extension even though they are Lite plugins, so make sure that those other plugins are not already flagged as .esl files), the options are to either cut back the number of mods, or merge the plugins. Merging plugins, however is something that really needs some advance knowledge of how to edit records and how to utilize xEdit. these are not unsurmountable issues, however, and everyone needs to start somewhere when learning to use tool for the game.

For information on how to use xEdit, see the guide in the xEdit section of the following, as well as the linked discussion in that section relating to Merging:

Above is from the PINNED TOPIC Helpful Links and References

Good luck!

Also, for some videos on the general use of xEdit, see this section, xEdit (SSEEdit), from the following (also from Helpful Links and References)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2882867968

And as regards any possibly conflicting information in those videos from things in my guide or posts, follow what I have written, and not what is shown in those vids.

Again, good luck!

I used R88_ESLIfy

I opened that script up and took a very quick look, and I do not see anything in it that takes account of the warning message displayed for some potential candidates:
"Warning: Plugin has new CELL(s) which won't work when turned into ESL and overridden by other mods due to the game bug"

And am therefore wondering if it is just seeing the following and basing its conversion upon it:
"Can be turned into ESL by compacting FormIDs first, then adding ESL flag in TES4 header"

Regardless, I still maintain that it is best to do most operations manually, as explained in my guide
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2660673605
in the How to Flag a Mod as an .esl File section, in order to ensure that things are being done correctly.

It may take longer to do, but in my experience working with xEdit (over 8,000 hours), many automated features sometimes are not the best and will result in errors.

Not always, of course - LOL! - but better safe than sorry.

Reading through it. I'll probably have a question or two but thanks will let you know how it goes!

I had just under 250 esm+esp's and after purchasing AE (for nolvus) I've hit 264 which sucks.
What if I get a warning message saying "this will most likely break any save games if you compact FormIDs" ?
https://imgur.com/a/FZFqiyJ

It also lists "records"

Why don't we start from the beginning? What version of the game are you using? It makes a difference if you are using SSE 1.6.1130 or any earlier version. Eslifying mods from earlier versions of the game to 1.6.1130 may give issues, depending on the number of records or record IDs. If using version 1.6.1130 of the game, use the latest version of the Creation Kit with the Creation Kit Platform Extended to see if a mod can be eslified. In the top bar of the CK you will see a notice if the loaded mod can be eslified or not.
I'm using AE content while being on SE version 1.5.97

R88_Eslify is a SSEEdit script from 2020, which has not been updated. It may not take any changes in the latest patch into account.

No ideas about the 1.5.97 version, but at least use SSEEdit to check if mods can be eslified and not R88_Eslify.

That's what I did and the ones that "can be" eslified, need to haveir ID's compacted.
However I get a warning message saying that if I do it, my save file will most likely have problems etc as seen on that message pop up

All that info is covered in the section in the guide I linked in post #4, and I strongly recommend you read and follow it - it contains step by step instructions. But if you get that warning for a mod, do not elsify it.

By the way, I am subscribed to the discussion, so will see any posts - even if I do not respond immediately, I will respond.

And Altbert brings up a good point regarding R88's script as well - besides what I have already commented on.

Also, be aware, that if you are using a modpack (such as Nolvus), there is not much help that I or anyone can give, and you would need to refer to the creator of the modpack. Also, any changes made to a modpack. unless the creator confirms that they are safe, risks breaking it. If you are using a modpack, it should really be used as is - especially one such as Nolvus (which I personally have very strong doubts about to begin with, and would not recommend someone use). Given that these are changes that seem to involve Nolvus, although I can answer general questions, I cannot really help you with it - only the modpack creator can (and frankly, as I said,I would not put much faith in their overall knowledge or in their build). And, keep in mind this is coming from someone who has probably the single heaviest modded (not to mention stable and CTD free) SSE game (or, at least, documented game) there is.

Additionally, if you are considering compacting Form IDs with SSEEdit to create an eslified mod, you will need to start a new game or load a save from before installing those compacted mods, simply because old Form IDs are stored in the save files and will not match the compacted Form IDs.
Can I somehow compact the form IDs mid play through?

What if I used that one save file cleaner?
