Hitting Ralof or Hardvar Doesn't Level Sneak
Anyone know why or how to fix what is happening? I haven't been able to find anyone else with this problem or talking about it other than a few obscure posts that had no resolutions. Basically, with the unofficial patch on I was able to level sneak by hitting the greybeards and crouching but when I went to turn the mod off and start a new game (in order to use the hidden chest glitches) I was not able to level up sneak at all except for a couple random hits that worked on Ralof. So I sneak up to him with the eyeball icon fully closed, smack him, and the sneak xp bar would not go up (except for random hits maybe every 20 or so smacks). This happens for both Ralof and Hardvar.
Anything would help.

Ralof and Havar, both "can see" you in stealth at this part, so it shouldn't level your sneak. Only your one-handed or two-handed would go up as you hit them, from what I've tried.

Maybe give this a go, always works for me ---
To level sneak during the tutorial part, choose Ralof path. When you get to the bear, and he gives you a bow go to the left hand side of that cave (before the exit) and crouch run at a wall nearby. Ralof will hang around with you but the bear being a close mob trying to detect you is what gets your sneak up. Don't know a version of this that works for Hadvar path though. GL

IF you go the Ralof route, after ambusunbh the Imperials in that very 1st room in the keep...make sure YOU get the Captains key and not Ralof.. Now Ralof will wait at the gate for you to find a way of opening it. You can now sneak behind Ralof back and forth, and back and forth, and level your sneak like this. It takes awhile, but if this is what you wanna do...

Back in the XBox 360 days, I used to go into the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood, remove my armor, crouch behind Orgnar, and back into the barrels. With a controller I could use one of my wife's hair ties and pin the joystick against the handle. Then, I could go watch a movie. When I got back, sneak was at 100.

If you are going bow as well...there is another cheap-af way to level sneak. Go to the following location...it overlooks another location where a Hagraven resides...shoot...back away until target goes out of view...sneak back...shoot...repeat...enjoy the 'skill drums'.
(All will be well as long as you don't use a strong enough bow that might kill her either in one shot...or after she heals.)

^^ you don't have to hit anything. Any high level target that you can shoot from a hard to get to vantage works, and you can miss and alert them with the noise all day, soon as they give up you get points.

if you do the DB intro early, or kill astrid in the same, you can also grab silent shoes which makes leveling it even more of a cake walk.

Just console command your skills up if you're gonna cheat anyway. Way less work

It doesn't though? You'd have to use some dumb completely unrelated console commands to screw up your save.

Go into a crowded room, sneak into a corner until the eye closes and auto walk into the walls. Sneak levels even if you are hiding from friendly npcs. Got mine to 60 in the whiterun inn, while i was having lunch irl.
