Saarthal trap wall
I can't get through the Saarthal wall trap. I put the amulet on and the wall does the buzzing thing but no spell breaks the wall down. Not sure I'm doing it right.

Normally fireball/bolt or something like that does the trick

Any spell that does damage does the trick...I usually just cast firebolt or sparks.
If this isn't happening for you then it's either a mod or a bug, try loading an earlier save and trying again, if it repeats then it's probably a mod issue.

If you have do you have a mod that does no damage to friends? I know there's one that does that to harmful shouts, spells I'm not certain.

You can also use a shout to open the way in place of a spell.

no mods to not hurt followers. tried every spell I have and nothing worked. have about 20 mods but I forget how to show them. Magical collage of winterhold is the only one i think taht could effect it but I run that all the time and have never had this problem before. I have reloaded a save from before entering Saarthal and that didn't work. I also reloaded a save from before I entered the collage and started that whole questline. I did use a console command to turn off the grass a few times "tg" but that I have used in the past too as I hate skyrim grass. If someone could remind me how to show my mods I'll post the list.

hmm well u could always noclip though, an use the console, to mark that section complete, it's likely to screw up ya game else-where though, or perhaps be safer to no clip, though then call him to you, he should still trigger the Pyjcic order cut scene and behave normally after.

thought about that. Was worried that no one else would be able to get through. And not sure it would screw up everything. I don't think it is a mod that is doing this. I have 15 including skse. I have used all but 5 mods. One is a house mod that doesn't add anything to the game. two are for cheat rings that effect mana regen but they haven't been picked up in game yet and one is a mod that adds a staff to the meridias beacon quest. The last is a portable alchemy mod. So I am not sure which one is messing things up or if it's just skyrim being skyrim.

Many of Skyrim's quests can be buggy. What you're experiencing may not be a mod issue but a sequence issue. I find that if one slows down and follows the role play it can correct a lot of issues.

Reload to just before you grabbed the amulet off the wall. This time, when you retrieve the amulet and the gate goes up, step over to Tolfdir and speak to him. When he says to try using the amulet, search your inventory for Saarthal Amulet (not the Gauldur Amulet) and put it on. Once the wall begins to resonate, stand directly in front of it and take a couple of steps back. Then, use a targeted spell (ex. fireball, flames, etc.) or use Fus Ro Dah directed at the wall.

It's basically anything set-quest or Stage complete, or quest reset, can an do mess ya game, best avoid those at all cost's.

Why it's of utmost importance, to create regular saves, generally i save every section i clear, then when i do the next, I save over the previous game an so forth, except for the boos, who gets a fresh save.

I have reloaded several games ( I have a bad habit of saving all the time) I only use save and not quick save. loaded a save from when I was told to help the other mage, a save from when I first entered Saarthal, a save when I first arrived at Saarthal outside. a save after we were told to go to Saarthal with only a ward spell because they are terrible teachers, a save before I met Tolfdir, and a save before I ever went to the college. So none of the saves worked and since I'm doing a wizard play through I think I should just delete all the saves, put my mods on a clean profile, and start over for the third time. The first time I accidently had the saves going to the cloud which was full. Never saved anything.
If any one has any clever ideas that would be nice. Hope it wasn't the console command (tg) that broke the game. I hate the grass in skyrim.

I doubt it, it's a toggle...... it's not at fault
Kittenpox Oct 10, 2024 @ 9:19pm
If the wall itself isn't part of a quest trigger, then tcl is the console command to toggle clipping. Just either have nothing selected, or yourself (00000014) selected via the console screen, so that the command applies to you instead of a random thing.

Once that's active, walk through the wall as though you were a ghost, then use TCL a second time to set yourself back to normal again. :-)

The wall breaking is part of a quest trigger. Once it has been broken, the gate comes down and Tolfdir follows through the opening and continues the quest. If you pass through without triggering this, the quest may not be completed.

As a last resort, you may try using TCL (toggle collision: On/Off) to pass through the wall. Once on the other side, you can use the command again to re-enable.

After which you may try either teleporting Tolfdir to you using the console command:
prid 0001C1A1
followed by
moveto player

From here, you would need to advance the quest with the command:
setstage MG02 40

Tolfdir may pick up from this point allowing for the intercept discussion with the Psijic Order. It's a long shot but, at this point, there's not much to loose. Obviously try it with a save that you can reload if it doesn't work.

I's best to avoid all set stage related commands, they are the 1 thing guaranteed to screw up your game, I tried it, and screwed up MY game.

Many residents on this forum advice against set quest commands
