Honestly I think it depends on your race and armor. Like I personally find gold looks horrible on dunmer.
Though of course the gold and silver variants that don't have jewels are worse than their jeweled counterparts.
Things that effect the strenght of an enchant are these:
Size of soul.
Skill in enchanting.
Enchanting perks.
Enchanting potions.
Azidhal´s armor set.
Black Book: The Sallow Regent and you pick Seeker of Sorcery.
If you are a Vampire the Necromage perk in Restoreation also helps making enchanting stronger.
