So being a vampire sucks, huh?
What up with the vampire mechanic, huh? In exchange for some pretty meh powers you get to suffer weakness, a necessity to feed (if you even bother with that part of it) and hostility from NPCs.

The vampire powers have no real adventuring utility to speak of: seduction, servant, sight. Yeah, invisibility would be useful...if I didn't already have the Shadowcloak of Nocturnal, the difference of which is a mere seconds of duration. Meanwhile I suffer -60 to health, stamina, and magika...unless I feed, which, lets face it, you have to go out of your way to find a sleeping NPC - I've got too much to do to keep taking time out of my day to go find someone to eat.

Overall I gotta say I'm more than a little underwhelmed by the added mechanic and more than a little inconvenienced, even irritated.

To me, it's a fun "go on a rampage once or twice" mode and that's it. And the Vampire Lord kind of looks cool.

Yeah, magic when you max it out pretty much stomps over any other magic-like mechanic in the game. Why bother with feeding and hostility when I can just drain life infinitely or pop a dead thrall for 0 magicka cost whenever I feel like it?

Well if you are going to be a mage, and we assume the unpatched Vanilla game, a Vampire mage will actually be better than a non vampire mage. For two main reasons: For one, you get the Champion of the Night permanent effect which makes Illusion spells 25% stronger. This is important if you use Illusion at all due to how Illusion spells are reliant on enemy level and will simply fail to affect them if they aren't strong enough against the enemy's level.

There is also the fact that Necromage affects your OWN spells, perks, and enchantments if you are a Vampire, unless you're running the unofficial patch.

Don't even get me started on the ABSOLUTELY underwhelming magic system in the game. I can do more at 0 level in Hogwarts Legacy!

I might try mods in a subsequent playthrough, but being my first playthrough I tend to avoid mods, just so I can get the feel of the game as designed first.

Your not using it properly that's all.

It's not that complicated...read spell tomes, get spells, up your various spell-casting perks...seriously, am I missing anything?

I'd still happily give up any 10 spells in Skyrim just to be able to use the weakest spell from Legacy in it, Revelio. That spell alone offers more in-game utility than any spell in Skyrim.

Yup

Nah, the OP is right. It is pretty underwhelming in Skyrim and requires a lot to make it as good as the two other main archetypes in this game. And even when you make it good, it's still pretty boring to use. There's little variety or interesting or unique spells.

And if you compare it to the previous games, it's extremely shallow compared to what the Elder Scrolls used to offer for magic playstyles.

thats fair . and yes the vanilla game is a bit lacking in some of those areas. magic in earlier elderscrolls games was far more intricate.

i didnt add any mods until id had the game for a few years. When you feel you have gotten what you can from the base game , there are some very good ones for expanding the magic system , college , perks ect , and a few good ones for making the vampire experience far more interesting.

Well a vampire does tend to suck blood so yes, being a vampire sucks.

Advantages of Vampire Lord are:
- "fast" backstep speed (same speed floating in all directions), makes it easy to kite
- constant Waterwalking effect really trolls stuff when you're outside
- explosive, ranged Absorb Health spell is pretty stronk, only balance is not being able to dualcast it
- the totally not a force choke spell is hilariously abusive

But if you use mods to give yourself the Absorb Health spell in non-Lord form and make a trivial edit to the Telekinesis spell, then yeah Vampire lord is pretty much just as useless as Werewolf.
