Noob-ish... where to sell stolen stuff early game
I haven't found many places in this first castle... general goods has bought some cups and mugs... but otherwise after taking what had 10 gold or more per lb throughout each place... I just stored all the books and everything else that wasn't being bought in a barrel near the exit.

I know I'm ten years late at best. Played through morrowind, oblivion, and all the fallouts from 1 to London, Starfield... Skyrim just... idk... it's optimized of all the other ES somewhat but still... you beat a dead horse so many times (get quest item, return with quest item, skill leveled) and I'm wandering in SSE either way. Tried to play this game so many times, and I'm not a hater but for me, the intro and other stuff killed it for me since it came out. Kept trying and then I heard we can at least fly on dragons at some point here. That's cool.

Still having a hard time early on selling all my stolen stuff so I'm just leaving it in a barrel. A phrase most of us long time bethesda players have probably said at some point or another.

Stolen items can only be sold to a Fence until you get the perk to sell anything to anyone under the Speech tree, which you probably wont get until later on.

Off the top of my head, one of the ladies in the Thieves Guild will buy stolen goods from you, Tonila. All you need is I think 50 gold to take the carriage to Riften (Most South East major city), or just walk there. Once you make it inside the city and past a few annoying NPCs; In the center of the town is a big well/cistern open area with some NPCs around selling stuff, one of them will approach you and ask you to steal a ring, this starts the thieves guild quest.

Do his little quest (You don't have to succeed, if you get caught by the guard it's not a fail) and he'll ask you to meet him in the Ragged Flaggon tavern, it's directly under the city.
I think once you get there or it might be after the second small quest you'll be able to sell to the fence there.

Also I don't remember how you trigger it, it might be part of the thieves guild stuff but one of the NPCs at the mage college of Winterhold will also become a fence and will buy your stolen goods.

The only initial fence that I know of is in the Riften Thieves Guild. The other fences I know of get established by doing thieves guild quests.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Putting your stuff in a barrel you do not own will make those items disappear.

Not immediately. And not all of them.

Its actually easy to find plenty of safe containers before you join the thieves guild.
If you use mods, under MO2 or Vortex. Try this, works perfect.

Not modding this one yet... for anybody interested... the useful link to that link with updates seems to be this link... https://github.com/VersuchDrei/MumsTheWord/... but... maybe I'm reading it wrong from the OG dev of mumstheword vs the chap versuchidrei underneath who provides an update?

And even 2 years ago on the second link it says currently bugged. So... yeah. I modded the crap out of starfield and played since it's release. Same with all the fallouts. The idea of mumstheword looks perfect... truth.

It's just rediculous that the guards don't know you have stolen items in your inventory but the merchants exactly know which items you have stolen.

Exactly one of the things about the whole series that has burned me out over the years, no matter how fancy the UI gets.

And thanks all for the general storage tips.

Follow up good news... wandered off to the edge of the map for a bit... saw some caves, lots of ghosts and some random fugitive who told me he'd kill me if I ratted him out after he just gave me this random mace then immediately got killed by a wolf right after the encounter... game back to my barrel of stuff... it was all there.

Yeah your stuff is good there for several in game days if I remember right, and as long as it's not an owned chest by one of the NPCs where they store things it should be fine. I still have a pile of dragon bones/scales in a barrel on the riverwood blacksmith's porch, probably been like a month in game already, just be aware they CAN go missing sometimes

Be careful about stashing your stuff out in the world; most containers respawn and you will lose your items. The following is what the wiki says about safe storage.

The following containers will never reset, thus they are permanently safe to store items.

All chests and containers inside purchasable houses.
All containers in the Abandoned House in Markarth.
The chest in Delphine's secret room inside the Sleeping Giant Inn.
The end table and wardrobe inside the ruined Helgen Inn.
The wardrobe in Riverside Shack.
The end table located in the Alchemist's Shack.
The Apothecary's Satchel located in the cellar of Anise's Cabin (and, by extension, the remaining containers within the house).
All the containers located within Drelas' Cottage.
The Arch-Mage's Quarters after completing the College of Winterhold questline.
The wardrobes in Dragonborn's room in the Hall of Attainment, at the College of Winterhold.
The chest at the entrance of Sky Haven Temple.
The metallic chest at the top of Valtheim Towers.
The ice runner chest in Broken Oar Grotto after the quest.
The chest inside Idgrod the Younger's room, in Highmoon Hall, Morthal.
All East Empire Company Strongboxes.DR
Severin Manor, if one has completed Served Cold.DR
All "wardrobes" and "bookcases" within the Volkihar Keep are safe for storage. Unless otherwise noted, the remaining containers respawn after ten days along with the rest of the keep.DG
All the containers within plots on which homesteads are constructed and within all homes that have been purchased.HF
The Chest in Weylin's Room after purchasing it.
The chest in front of High Hrothgar, where Klimmek's Supplies are to be placed for his miscellaneous quest.
The containers within houses owned by followers.
