Off the top of my head, one of the ladies in the Thieves Guild will buy stolen goods from you, Tonila. All you need is I think 50 gold to take the carriage to Riften (Most South East major city), or just walk there. Once you make it inside the city and past a few annoying NPCs; In the center of the town is a big well/cistern open area with some NPCs around selling stuff, one of them will approach you and ask you to steal a ring, this starts the thieves guild quest.
Do his little quest (You don't have to succeed, if you get caught by the guard it's not a fail) and he'll ask you to meet him in the Ragged Flaggon tavern, it's directly under the city.
I think once you get there or it might be after the second small quest you'll be able to sell to the fence there.
Also I don't remember how you trigger it, it might be part of the thieves guild stuff but one of the NPCs at the mage college of Winterhold will also become a fence and will buy your stolen goods.
The following wiki article has a section on other ways to remove a stolen tag.

Its actually easy to find plenty of safe containers before you join the thieves guild.

And thanks all for the general storage tips.
Yeah your stuff is good there for several in game days if I remember right, and as long as it's not an owned chest by one of the NPCs where they store things it should be fine. I still have a pile of dragon bones/scales in a barrel on the riverwood blacksmith's porch, probably been like a month in game already, just be aware they CAN go missing sometimes
