If you are wanting to try out modded Skyrim, then go ahead, you should be able to use most mods you want.
For most ... but not all. 🫠
People who continue to cling to 1.5.97 either do so because there’s some smaller, niche mods that they personally feel they can’t live without, out of some kind of misplaced spite/protest because they don’t like that those four CC pieces were added for free, and/or they’re convinced that 1.5.97 runs better and is more stable (which I don’t think there’s any objective evidence which proves that).
At this point, there is very little reason why anyone would want to maintain on older game version. It's important to keep up on the current state of modding utilizing guided information; especially the following -
