Returning to skyrim and modding.
I have not really played skyrim for about a year. Before that I was doing a 100% modless run.

So I haven't really modded the game since anniversary addition/ creations nonsense happened. Since everyone didn't go to GoG like I hopped and Bethesda didn't make anniversary it's own game like special I was wondering if there is a way to know what mods to ignore and what are usable still.

My best example is path of the anti mage but that has not been changed since 2018.

I recently got a new pc so I'm looking to make Skyrim epic again.

This answer assumes you are going to use the most up-to-date game version-SkyrimSE.exe v. 1.6.1170 on Steam. Ordinary .esp/.esm/.esl files work as normal and mesh and texture replacers work as normal.

The big difference is in skse and skse-based mods; from day 1, skse has always been game-version dependent, and in 2021 BGS made some major changes to scripting, so all skse-dependent mods need to be compatible with game versions 1.6+. Rule of thumb-if any mod has a .dll file take extra care that it is compatible with your version of Skyrim.

Path of the Anti-Mage does not appear to have been updated since 2018. It requires skse, but does not have a .dll file. It might work with the current game version; test it on a clean save and revert to an older save if it doesn't.

The following guide should help;

Pay particular attention to this link: https://modding.wiki/en/skyrim/users/skse-plugins because it shows the compatibility of a lot of major skse-dependent mods and offers newer alternatives to mods that are no longer supported.
Yea, i might, I'm currently trying LoreRim and I know modding skyrim is like building onto a house of cards with random decks. Thank for the tip. It was just sad seeing so many of my favorite follower mods not updated and a few of my staples. I really did hope people went to GoG so we never had to update the game again.

Which followers are you worried about? Most of the popular follower mods are just a plugin and an archive and work just fine in 1170. Like I said in my first paragraph, most ordinary plugins are not version-dependent.

Updates are not a problem, unless you allow them to be. There are plenty of ways to protect your game. I have a horde of xSE mods in my games and it is all the same to me, if game would update today.

If some update actually breaks some mod for a further play through then it usually gets either updated or replaced quite quickly. Of course there are mods that might never see that, because MIA mod author set heavy permission restrictions, or no one cared enough for the mod to fix or replace it. Throw those in to garbage bin and move along. They are just gone.

If mod does not have DLL-files, then the last update date might not be an issue. Biggest problem are mods that were last updated before compiler update.

That said, I have plenty of mods in list that were last updated around 2018. They were not hit by compiler update and have not needed any extra updates to keep up with SSE development.

What older companion mods tend to lack is the interaction with other characters. For example, Remiel has horde of interactions with other custom NPCs, but my favorite pal Inigo has far less these days

if you change the Steam settings to update on launch or whatever they are calling it now - launch through Vortex (or your mod manager) and it never updates , plus you can also rollback your game and use those mods again.........unless you deleted them after they have been removed from Steam. i have about 30 mods installed that have been removed from Nexus even ones from when they introduced collections and caused people to get pissy and leave , this is why there is so many other mod sites for Skyrim - which is hilarious because all those other sites are doing it now to.
you dont have to update your game if you dont want to , and what updates aqre you talking about because the last one i know about was back in 2022 when they relaesed the AE edtion then some hot fixes but nothing after sept. 2022.?.

part that sucked was I was on a much weaker computer and didn't have a active game going pre anniversary, thus when i downloaded Skyrim again it was pre updated, plus i purchased the anniversary update because i figured it might be useful. Ironically for my 100% achievement run the random junk really helped. No because it was good but because it was game breaking in alot of fun ways that made the final few BS achievements fine.

Currently i am running a mod List called Lore Rim, more because when i did mod skyrim i normally broke more then i improved but it's going well. Almost like playing skyrim for the first time again.

Yet i still look forward to ES6 hoping either it flops so hard Microsoft guts the stuido, or does just well enough they treat Skyrim like Morrowind.
