The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

Extreme lag in gameplay
Hey all - Been playing Skyrim since it released on Xbox platforms, and on Steam for a year or so now. I'm currently playing a vanilla run and have never had any problems. For the last week though, when I load the game there's severe lag starting at the loading screen and then in-game. Several seconds just to turn directions, and it's glitchy even then. It's like my PC is maxxed out, but looking at my system I have plenty of memory and CPU power. (Running a 2023 HP Victus with RTX 4060) Also, this isn't happening on any other Steam games, I can load others just fine. Haven't changed settings in Skyrim, all my mods are disabled at the moment, I even uninstalled and reinstalled the game but still having the same issue. Any advice?

Updating my Nvidia driver didn't fix my lag issue. I set OneDrive to stop syncing while I play (pause syncing each time I play) and that is working for me at this time. My games are playable.
wait, do you have a 1990s 5600rpm IDE HDD? that can't possibly be it, on a modern m.2 SSD, compared to upload speeds, even if you paid for 2GBps symmetric fibre internet, it would be done in seconds, I doubt that can be it... reads to upload are nothing on SSD with RAM being used as a cache, and not linked to the game nor the graphics in any way...

I'm streaming a 4k ~150Mbit/sec movie with the cache buffer set to 10 minutes which is gigs and gigs of constant writes, to the same drive Skyrim is on, in a window on top of Skyrim, just to prove a point... it's no monster either, just a ~7GB/sec 4th gen Samsung 990 Pro NVMe, yours is probably newer/faster... CPU usage went up, GPU is exactly the same (gotta love hardware video streaming, thanks nv!)

uhh... I hate to ask this... but is it possible it was just your shader cache rebuilding? as you said it played fine before, and your onedrive settings were whatever they were then, too.

was it laggy for like a half hour total and then now it's fine?
Update -
After about a week of back-and-forth, Bethesda wasn't able to fix my problem. They believe it's a Windows issue, although they didn't seem to think it was due to 24H2. They thought it could be a corrupted profile on my machine. I'll save you all the details but basically checked everything, anti-virus, drivers, etc. Right now the game won't even load for me. I get the Skyrim Launcher, and when I click Play the game window opens briefly in the taskbar and closes, and the Steam game page button goes from the blue Stop to the green Play, indicating the game isn't running.

However, I was able to create a brand new local profile ("Guest User") on my PC, and when using that, initially the game loaded and played just fine. I had at least one session where I played for 30 minutes without issue. However, that profile is now lagging too - though it hasn't gotten as bad yet as the main profile account was (back when I could still load the game).

Next stop is Windows Support (oof) to see if there's anything they can do.

Still happy to take suggestions if others are still having this issue.

Edit - I don't use OneDrive and have had it turned off since I got my PC originally. So mine shouldn't be OneDrive syncing issues.

Are you in a position to be able to reinstall windows? Meaning you have your cd keys? Modern windows can reinstall while keeping your personal files. Will take about a day, reinstalling drivers and updates, but faster than support will take to tell you the same.
Sounds like a (faulty) script heavy mod kills your game.

No mods were running on this playthrough. Since it originally happened, I've also uninstalled and reinstalled, but have not redownloaded any mods yet.
It my be totally unrelated, but it is worth doing anyway: there may be mod files left over - just uninstalling and reinstalling will not get rid of them, so you should do a clean reinstall to ensure that there are no mod remnants - if only to completely rule that out as a potential cause. To do a clean reinstall, follow this guide EXACTLY and do everything it says to the letter:

And DO NOT clean or edit the Master files or any Creation Club content.

Good luck!
Hello, having the same problem, did you find a solution?
