So last night I downloaded skyrim special edition with the anniversary upgrade. When I tried to load it, it appears as a small window in the upper left of my screen. I tried adjusting the resolution in the options and checking the windowed/bordered boxes. No change. Tried messing around with settings for the game in windows and display options for windows itself. No change. After I ran out of ideas I had a further running list of things from Grok to try and still nothing worked. I ended up uninstalling the game and requested a refund. I read somewhere after the fact that it was possible the anniversary upgrade may have something to do with the issue, so this morning I downloaded just the special edition and attempted to load it. All the same problems. I should also note that for both versions, there was no sound and every time I attempted to load a new game it crashed immediately. If someone here has encountered this issue and resolved it I’d love to talk to you. I feel like I’m overlooking something simple but not sure what the heck it might be

Which resolution? You might need a mod if it's an extreme 32:9 ratio or something similarly exotic.

Current windows resolution is 3840x2160. I’ve tried matching the game to that in the options. I also messed around with lower settings both in game and in windows. No change other then when I dropped my windows resolution really low the game screen got a bit bigger but still offset to the left hand corner a little bit

Usually, you should be able to set a 4k resolution in the launcher, or simply do it via the config file:

- Navigate to [USERNAME]/Documents/My Games/ Skyrim Special Edition/
- Open the skyrimprefs.ini
- First, set bFull Screen=1
- Then, search for the: 'iSize H=x' & 'iSize W=x' line under [Display] (or use ctrl+f)
- Change the 'iSize H=' to: 'iSize H=2160'
- Change the 'iSize W=' to: 'iSize W=3840'
- Save the file.

If both options do not seem to work, then check if there are any funky settings in the video card config tool.

To fix Skyrim for widescreen displays, you can use the Complete Widescreen Fix[www.nexusmods.com] mod, which adjusts the game's menus and interface for 21:9 aspect ratios.

Additionally, you may need to manually edit the SkyrimPrefs.ini file to set the correct resolution for your monitor, as Alex has kindly instructed in the comment above.

PSA for those with the "zoomed-in" bug running the game in 4K
Had this issue and found a solution for it. Since I couldn't find this solution online I figured I'd share it.

I had the game set to borderless window with both it and my monitor at 3840x2160. The game was zoomed-in and I could only see the top left quarter of it. Turns out when you set your desktop to this resolution, Windows automatically incrases scaling to 150%. What worked for me was to switch it back to 100%.

You can find the scaling option from the Windows 10 Settings app>System>Display under Scale and layout.
