Stolen to Unstolen
Hello all. Is there a way to take a stolen item (Dragonbane sword I got from Sky Haven Temple) and make it "unstolen"?

I am not sure if this would work this is just a guess i have never done it myself but what if you sell it to a fence and then buy it back that might work but I don't know for sure and sorry if it doesn't.

Yes but not ingame. Mods exist that do that. Although been a long while, just literally started yesterday for new years break, but selling to a fence and rebuying it might be an ingame method. Wont be ale to test as not playing a thief this go around.
Thanks guys! I'll try selling it to a fence and buy back.

is using the console an option?

Spoiler:

Drop it to the ground target it it (so you can see the ID) and type setownership then press enter. Close console and pick it up

You can also use the glitch where having a follower "take all" from a container flips the stolen flag on everything that is over their weight limit. You can guarantee the sword gets flipped by filling their inventory with other stuff first.

There's also a mod for a swag bag as a stolen flag remover, that works really well.

You drop the Swag bag from your inventory, which puts a floating pouch in the air in front of you. Click on that and add all or any stolen items into it, then close the bag and it will remove the stolen flag on each item and return them to their respective menus quite quickly. Handy when you have a lot of stolen items.

The easiest way is what Ihateeverybody suggested. Drop it (in a safe place), select it in the colsole and type 'setownership' (whitout quotes) and press enter. Why in a safe place? Just to prevent any NPC running up to you and asking "Can I have that?"
Hello all. I've tried the command setownership and its not working.
I bring up console command, select the sword, type in setownership, also player. setownership, player.setownership hit enter, get out of the console command thingy and its still saying its stolen. Only thing I have done to the sword is upgraded it. I've checked to make sure I was typing it in correctly as per pt3 of:

Only thing I can think of is you are clicking on the wrong thing (fog, Background, etc.). You may be clicking on the object, but their may be things between you and the object.

Do you have more informative console? If not, it gets more complicated as you have to have some idea of the item id. If the item is enchanted you may have more issues.

Dragonbane? Do a search on dragonbane (help dragonbane). Here is where it may get confusing. If its a leveled reward or item there may be multiples (for Level ranges, if you get it at level 15 vs level 30 vs level 50, etc) entries.

setownership will work, you just have to click to the correct ID (Number/Character Sequence). That is just a guess though.

If you have more informative console (and its requirements, you can see a host of information which will clarify what you are actually clicking on.

Please note I am NOT saying TOO INSTALL. Just putting this over here if you are interested.

more informative console

The Mod I had recommended is found at Nexus as Swag bag the Stolen Flag remover.

What "Ihateeverybody" Should have told you with using the console to SetOwnerShip

After clicking on an item and using the command setownership you do need to look away from the stolen item getting it out of the viewing range then when you look back the item will no longer have the stolen tag.

So if you don't look away from the item before picking it up, it will still have the stolen flag

If that is confusing then use the mod listed above.

The point/place/spot of clicking on the object is important ... click on objects behind and around the sword to see if they have the same number as when clicking on the sword/item ... if so click the sword in different places to get it's unique number ... place it in the open without a lot of clutter around. It is possible to click on a workstation item and pick up a background object... ALSO... Do Not Be Standing Too Close to your Item... you Will get your Armor Numbers.

there also is a legit option. Sell it to a fence. Buy it back. Voila. But it doesn't work every time. Another option is to reverse pickpocket the item to your spouse. It should be available in his store then.

Not sure what you are talking about. But with things like a bed I just need to close and open the console (Again I have more informative console, so the PRID is still selected (unless you restart the game), Pretty sure its the same in Vanila but then you can't see all I can with MIC.)

Oh I just remembered. Probly easier thing to use is clearownership . That will remove all ownership. I use that when I want to ensure anyone can use a bed.

So new rule. Target the item in console and type clearownership then enter and you should be good.
When you target something in the console you can rotate the mouse wheel and it will change which item on the screen is being selected. After the number of the item will be a descriptor, this should tell you what is selected, match the descriptor to the item then do any commands. You may have changed ownership of a wall.
