Skyrim update question
Just to confirm, Skyrim was last updated on 2022 and there's a low chance of it being updated right now to mess up a modded gameplay right?

Thanks in advance.

You can protect your game from updating with a very simple step.

Go to Steam\steamapps

Look for a file called appmanifest_489830.acf.

Right click and select properties (you may have to select more options to get to properties.)

Down near the bottom of the properties box you will see field called Read Only. Click it so it is filled in and shows blue. Click Apply or Okay and close the box.

Now on the off chance an update pops up for any reason steam cannot deploy it and will throw up a read write error which can be ignored.

Want to apply an update? Uncheck the box and apply.

NOTE: If you install the game you will install the current version. IF YOU verify files all my instructions may hinder that. The steps I showed above should only be done when you have a working build that WILL not need to be changed by steam.

The last Skyrim update was January of 2024. Bethesda stopped updating the Steam news page before that.

If you have a working game with a large mod list, NEVER up date the game or any mods, Until you are ready to go through the process of making a new mod list as some of them will not be updated and not be usable.

Oof. Thanks for the info. I actually thought they stopped updating already and was safe to start a heavily modded game.

Do you have any other guides on how to do this (Preventing the main game from updating)? I've been searching around and have been having a hard time preventing the game from updating when I used some guides I found.

I'll give this a try. Thanks for sharing.

Never launch the game from Steam, launch it from SKSE. If you have it set to only update when you launch and never start from Steam it never updates.

The last update will likely be the last one since BGS just re-instated paid mods rather than bothering with commissioning freelance DLC content (which needed the executable to be updated whenever they refreshed their storefront's offerings. The paid mods can be updated at any time by the mod authors without any need to publish another universal update.

I am using this. 99% of archive updates have been cc icons. If you are not using those, then updates to .bsa do not really matter. There has been 1 or 2 times when we actually had to update archives as well.

SkyrimSE.exe Auto-Backup

Use the stock game file feature with MO2 and it will never matter if Skyrim updates or not

Ah real good point, I totally forgot that.

I never realized you could do this. I thought that even if you open it via SKSE, it'll have to auto update since technically you're "launching" the game even if you turn off the auto update in steam properties.

I'll have to explore MO2 a bit. I'm not familiar with this feature since I was still using NMM and only used MO2 rarely after NMM, so it's been quite a long while ever since I modded the game wholeheartedly.
