Depending on how long you have been gone, it very well could be gone. If its just been an in game day or two, you MIGHT be ok.
You can try back at or around 8am, the wife or kid might still be inside. But they tend to wander during the day so don't count on it. Alvor goes to the inn (or that just might be Immersive Citizens mod). The wife should be home. Check in around 7pm - 11 pm. If they say to get out, Get out.
Edit: And always make a manual save before, just in case.
Sounds like they will need a crew. Might I recommend the following:
1. Anneke Cragjumper - She used to be an adventurer just like you until she settled down and got married. She discovered the Mine Darkwater crossing is built around.
2. Uthgerd the UnBroken - You never really know a woman until you have had a fist fight with them (I do not endorse violence in anyway for any reason).
3. Stenvar - The Best Mercenary Money can buy. (Not sure about this one, I haven't run with Stenvar in the longest time).
Yeah I got nothing else. I was trying to do one of those heist movie things, but I don't get out much (or watch heist movies).
If you don't mind modding, you can look for small starter player homes.
