Can't get back into Alvor's house for storage
I put some stuff in Alvor's house then did some questing. When I came back I have to pick their lock to get in. Not sure I want to do that. Now I'm overloaded and is my stuff gone now? Or does storage travel with me wherever I go?

Yikes.

Depending on how long you have been gone, it very well could be gone. If its just been an in game day or two, you MIGHT be ok.

You can try back at or around 8am, the wife or kid might still be inside. But they tend to wander during the day so don't count on it. Alvor goes to the inn (or that just might be Immersive Citizens mod). The wife should be home. Check in around 7pm - 11 pm. If they say to get out, Get out.

Edit: And always make a manual save before, just in case.

Alvor and Sigrid's House will reset in 10 days. There is no safe storage in any of the containers there. You will have to break into the house within 10 days to get your gear back. Otherwise it's gone!

Sounds like they will need a crew. Might I recommend the following:

1. Anneke Cragjumper - She used to be an adventurer just like you until she settled down and got married. She discovered the Mine Darkwater crossing is built around.

2. Uthgerd the UnBroken - You never really know a woman until you have had a fist fight with them (I do not endorse violence in anyway for any reason).

3. Stenvar - The Best Mercenary Money can buy. (Not sure about this one, I haven't run with Stenvar in the longest time).

Yeah I got nothing else. I was trying to do one of those heist movie things, but I don't get out much (or watch heist movies).

the best place to use for safe storage early on before you have a house is Anise's cabin across the river from the standing stones on the way to Riverwood. The cabin's basement is non-respawning, meaning that all containers are safe for storage. Several of the containers on the ground floor of the cabin are also standard safe containers (e.g., the cupboard and dresser). Be careful, as the barrel is not safe. Additionally, neither is the Apothecary's Satchel. Kill the witch and take her cabin. The basement also has an alchemy bench and enchanting table. And the ground floor has a bed.

If you must store items in Riverwood, I recommend the bee hive on the side of the north gate. It feels silly putting battleaxes inside a bee hive, but it's outdoors so you can't be locked out, no one owns it, and it doesn't respawn.

I loved the creative thinking to use someone's else house for storage of goods. It does take a while to get something early in game but most (99%) of the time, the items you gather are not valuable or can be found again later ingame. I would sell these because gold is weightless.

If you don't mind modding, you can look for small starter player homes.
