On the soup bit, you will need to find a cooking pot or spit to make them. Can usually find them inside the various inns. Though the ones that help with staying warm require fire salts to make.
Torches and the flame cloak spell can help too. Same with moving near other sources of fire.
One 3/4 of the way to the monastary and one just before you get to the word wall at the top.
I was amazed at how many times I had to hike up and down from there in the course of a playthrough.
Another rough part is skuldufn. Make sure you bring plenty of hot soup with you. You will be moving from brazier to brazier trying to lure enemies to you. Alduin was en esier enemy to deal with than the cold.
Soups are the way to go... but if you do want more help, backpacks can add a bit more protection. There are a couple necklaces that add more protection. A mod that has capes can add more. For me it was the advance planning, like start early when the sun comes out. Going back down does not have to be the way you cam up.
Good luck!
Fire salts are hard to come by at this stage.
I’ll keep an eye out for other gear that can make colder areas more survivable thanks for the help.
Really, the Creation isn't all that great. But it does let you set up a point to warm yourself up, get some sleep, and get some food. Somewhat useful in an area you are going to keep coming back to for a bit.
I might have to look into this feature I can see this being real useful for the colder areas.
Do companions have permanent death cause when Lydia dropped she wasn’t limping on the ground like companions usually do she was dead.

I am personally using Sunhelm instead of Survival mode and camping with Campfire mod. (+ fix.) Sunhelm is based on Survival mode and works with mods mentioned above.
Note that soups will be considered as warm foods. This is why I am personally using Campfire: I can build a fire to warm myself and boil a soup to keep going in the middle of the Pale.
Edit:
Yep. Using either Convenient Horses or Immersive Horses is also recommended, so that horses will have proper inventories to store stuff - like extra tents, firewood, cold survival gear, Serana's extra hoods (patched bug :p) etc.
Most companions can die. The enemy isn't supposed to keep targeting them once they go down, but any damage over time effect (like poison) will keep ticking and can kill them. So can things like stray arrows or spells, or area attacks.
(The Protected status active followers get in Skyrim does not work the same way as the Fallout version. Fallout Protected status prevents damage from enemies, but not from you, when the follower is down. Skyrim Protected status does not do that, but instead just causes the enemy to ignore the follower. This means they can still take damage when down.)
Companions are protected. Only you, or external massive damage, can kill them while they are kneeling.
If they die, their death script runs and game will consider them as dead from there on. That cannot be undone with console, even if character would get resurrected.
Edit: Fixed one severe typo.
Clear Skies shout. In Survival it has a practical use as it clears the weather. This in turn will slow down the rate at which you freeze.
