Getting a weird Vampirism bug
So for some reason when fighting vampires they are giving me full vampirism and not the disease. My screen flashes red and it says feeding has reduced your powers, or whatever the line is. It seems to be completely skipping the disease stage of vampirism.

I googled a solution to this and the only thing that came up was something about if Serena is your companion and she drinks a blood potion it turns you into a vampire. But I have not even started Dawnguard, so Serena is definitely not my follower.

It's making fighting multiple vampires at the same time nearly impossible without becoming a full vampire myself.

It's a bugged version of vampirism. The "Serana Blood potion" bugged version. It can't be cured in the regular methods. You have to gain actual vampirism and then cure it.

It doesn't really matter though because I always reloaded a previous save when it happens and quicksave before every vampire encounter. I read about the bug and apparently wearing a resist disease enchanted item prevents it from happening, so I made one and haven't got the bug again... so far at least.

It's not a dawnguard specific quest problem, but an artifact of an item Dawnguard DLC Added. The Blood Potions. Something Changed them or their use.

At a wild stab in the dark guess it could be something to do with Spell Area of Effect, Alchemy change, or some other unknown.

Edit: Clarified some things.
I've narrowed it down to this being the problem. Every time an enemy Vampire with a potion of blood drinks it, I get the bugged version of vampirism. I looked but couldn't find a mod that removes them from NPCs, or the game entirely.

Then the simplest way to fix the issue is to remove whatever mod is giving NPCs blood potions. No NPC has blood potions unless you give it to them. You don't normally need a mod to remove potions of blood from NPCs because NPCs usually don't have them at all.

I mean, isn't it possible you porting mods from the 32bit version of skyrim is messing stuff up in unintended ways?

I'm not using any mod that gives NPCs blood potions. Vamp NPCs naturally have potions of blood with Dawnguard installed.

That's simply not true.

In a standard game with dawnguard installed, the Item DLC1BloodPotion can be found
*at 6 locations in interior cells
- DLC1VampireCastleGuildhall [Count: 4]
- DLC1VampireCastleDungeon02 [Count: 1]
- TestTony [Count: 1]

*in one leveled item list, distributed to 4 copies of Harkon, and only spawns on death
- DLC1DeathItemHarkon
| DLC1Harkon
| DLC1HarkonCombat
| DLC1HarkonCombatMelee
| DLC1HarkonCombatMagic

*one possible quest reward
- DLC1Radiant (dlc1radiantscript)

That's the reason why even uesp only mentions the bug in regard to serana, the only vampire which can loot or carry a potion. All other vampires would require reverse pickpocketing, which is very unlikely to happen per chance.

The sooner you accept that one of your mods is distributing the potions, the sooner you find "The Cure"

Alternate fix for the original bug caused by the DLC1BloodPotionEffectScript
which calls the VampireFeed function of the PlayerVampireQuest, no matter who is drinking the potion or if the player is a vampire or not.

DLC1BloodPotionEffectScript.psc
Scriptname DLC1BloodPotionEffectScript extends ActiveMagicEffect PlayerVampireQuestScript Property PlayerVampireQuest Auto Race Property ArgonianRaceVampire Auto Race Property BretonRaceVampire Auto Race Property DarkElfRaceVampire Auto Race Property HighElfRaceVampire Auto Race Property ImperialRaceVampire Auto Race Property KhajiitRaceVampire Auto Race Property NordRaceVampire Auto Race Property OrcRaceVampire Auto Race Property RedguardRaceVampire Auto Race Property WoodElfRaceVampire Auto Event OnEffectStart(Actor akTarget, Actor akCaster) if akCaster == Game.GetPlayer() if akTarget.GetRace() == ArgonianRaceVampire \ || akTarget.GetRace() == BretonRaceVampire \ || akTarget.GetRace() == DarkElfRaceVampire \ || akTarget.GetRace() == HighElfRaceVampire \ || akTarget.GetRace() == ImperialRaceVampire \ || akTarget.GetRace() == KhajiitRaceVampire \ || akTarget.GetRace() == NordRaceVampire \ || akTarget.GetRace() == OrcRaceVampire \ || akTarget.GetRace() == RedguardRaceVampire \ || akTarget.GetRace() == WoodElfRaceVampire PlayerVampireQuest.VampireFeed() endif endif EndEvent

I've cut down hundreds of bloodsuckers (Dawnguard installed of course), enough that I usually have to keep cure disease potions or hawk feathers with me because every few fights one manages to get me sick. Never, ever had one with a blood potion. Maybe Harkon? But if so he never used it.

You're right and I found which mod was doing it. It was embarrassingly obvious too lol.
