Downgrade Patch
Hey I have been out of the loop with modding for about 2 years now. Last time I was modding it was really complicated because you had to downgrade your game to an older patch since most mods worked only on that patch...

Is that still the case? Or has everyone moved onto the current updated version of skyrim?

AE is just SE with some of the paid mods available for free, and SE's been out quite a while. I'm pretty sure most of the mods that are still being worked on at all have been upped to SE.

Ah...ya everything I used in the past was from patch 1.5, now everything is 1.6 I think? Just not sure what everyone is rocking these days.

Just perform a clean reinstall using the guide and start fresh. There is so much to choose from now.

Just keep in mind that mods are game version specific (currently: 1.6.1170) regardless of whether you purchase the AE DLC or not. Just pay attention to the mod requirements and installation instructions. A quick review of the mod Posts and Bugs sections are also helpful.

If its a mod thats being maintained, it should be up to date for the current patch of 1.6.1170, which has been out for nearly a year now.

1.5.97 would be for pre-anniversary update mods, for those not wanting the 4 free CC bits that came with the following patch.

You might find some still using 1.6.640 as there was slightly over a year between that patch and 1.6.1170.

Unless you have very strong feelings about the newer content, there isn't any particularly good reason to downgrade.

The only place you may run into minor difficulties if your game is up to date is with skse-based mods.
The following chart shows the update status of many major mods and offers alternatives for the handful of mods that were not being supported.

If your game is up-to-date, most ordinary .esp, .esm, and .esl mod files are unaffected.
