Skyrim not launching when I install SKSE through Vortex

I had it working like 2 months ago so im not sure what changed, everything else works but when I try to launch through SKSE it dosnt start anything up. did I install a wrong version or what?

this was what vortex was telling me to install.

I always use the Desktop executable to launch the game, after installing SKSE64 manually as per Silverlock's instructions. Since I rarely open Vortex after I'm mostly finished modding the game, I don't want to open Vortex simply in order to launch the game.

you mean the SKSE64 loader in the folder? I tried using that too.

Then Vortex hasn't installed it properly for you. Or you have the wrong SKSE64 for your game version.

I would go directly to Silverlock.org and match the version needed for your game version.

People occasionally have trouble with their anti-virus software and it removing SKSE. See that this did not happen to you, too.

Do you at least get a log file for SKSE in ...\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\SKSE ? If so then check what it says.

um I dont see a log file in here, also I tried both the special edition download and anniversery download on Silverlock. neither will launch. im gunna reinstall the game and try again real quick

You did follow the instructions for a manual installation of SKSE as per skse64_readme.txt, yes?

Yes I did this time I got it launching, will using the SKSE64 Launcher allow me to use mods with vortex or do I need to do something different with that?

No, you can use Vortex as before. No need to do anything differently. Best to create a link for the SKSKE64 launcher to your desktop so you can start the game there without starting Vortex as was already mentioned.

ok it stopped working again, I launched the the SKSE launcher and it worked but with none of my mods and after closing it it now refuses to open again. I dunno man I move on from this, every time I mess with game files my whole computer catches fire lol.

Sounds like something is actively messing with it, like anti-virus software. Did you already check for that?

Sounds like something is actively messing with it, like anti-virus software. Did you already check for that?

ah good idea, tho I factory reset my pc recently and I dont have any specific antivirus besides maybe windows security? could that be doing it?

It doesn't do it with me, but check it anyways. Are all the SKSE files still in the Skyrim directory? Anti-virus software may try to remove/quarantine it.

nah it all looks like its here infact I have vortex backups now for the dll and the loader but outside of that it looks normal. ah wait it seems like that was from the old skse I had installed on vortex. after removing that it still seems to not be launching

OK so if you're are using Vortex you should be letting Vortex install SKSE64 for you. Vortex will not only install it for you but it will tell you if you try to select the wrong version of SKSE64. I'm not saying you tried to install the wrong version I'm simply pointing this out.

Once install Vortex will also alert you when there's a new version of SKSE64 for your game.

After installing SKSE64

1. Go to your Vortex Dashboard
   
2. In the Tools section find the Script Extender (or use the "+Add Tool)
   
3. Select the 3 vertical dots
   
4. Select Edit
   
5. for Name if it's not already there type Skyrim Script Extender 64
   
6. Under the Target location, direct it to your skse64_loader.exe
   (Ex: \steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\skse64_loader.exe)
   
7. Save
   
8. Select the 3 vertical dots
   
9. Select Make Primary

The steps above allow you to properly run SKSE from Vortex which you should always do!
(always be sure Steam is running in the background before launching)
