If I ever went back to pure vanilla I would be lost in a second.
Edit: Added a Semi Colon between Charcol and the descritions to not muddy the waters and cause confusion (Sorry anyone that was confused).
the fastest way is just to cheat; do 'help charcoal 4' look at the MISC or INGR lines, everyone would see those two, 33760 (drawing sticks) and bfb09 (charcoal bricks), and any mod(s) provided ones you might need instead, then 'player.additem bfb09 50' (or whatever), and move on with your smelting... if everything else is working fine? just "find"
just pondering, I don't know the mod, but maybe charcoal is made in a cooking fire or tanning rack or any other crafting station, besides the smelter?
In the vanilla game, charcoal exists in a stick and chunk form but it serves no purpose other than the sticks being used in a Calcemo quest and as part of a few recipes for the Atronach Forge.
Neither form can be crafted.
A number of smithing, crafting, immersion, etc mods change this and do things like make charcoal an ingredient for crafting something, add mine-able coal/charcoal nodes, or allow you to make charcoal at a smelter.
Of course, how these mods go about it vary between them.
Thus it would help to know what mod(s) you’re using that may add this feature.
Do you have one to recommend ?
You don’t have one?
So why’re you trying to use firewood to make charcoal in order to then make steel?
Did you just assume that’s what you needed to do??
Buddy…it’s like someone above said: 1 iron ore + 1 corrundum ore = 1 steel ingot. Firewood and charcoal are not needed for the smelter.
Firewood’s purpose is for arrow crafting, and to be sold to some innkeepers and/or lumbermill owners in exchange for a small amount of coin and an increase in the hidden relationship status (allowing you to freely take some items for their home/inn).
I am using this one. Check through MCM options, in case there is something you like/dislike.
Mod allows crafting steel from iron and charcoal. Otherwise it does like really differ much from vanilla crafting, but ads a lot of options to it.

CCOR changes that to 2:1. I am smelting iron from gear I find, so I never saw that as an issue. In fact, I tend to end up having quite a lot of iron in hand.
But people are used to 1:1 ratio. It is something that should get mentioned.
