The Steam version can be found on Fanatical, Kinguin and Humble Bundle. They usually price games lower than Steam because Steam takes a bigger cut of sales from developers than everyone else.
The versions matter only if you intend to mod the game. Epic, GOG and Windows Store have their own versions. Windows Store is garbage though, just like Win 11. I got free DLC from Prime for Fallout online, then it disappeared. A search turned up hundreds of posts, even on the Windows site about Windows Store losing games. None of solutions, including jacking around with Windows command lines worked.
