2 it should show the merchant's inventory at the top divided into sections while yours
is at the bottom and also divided into several sections, you sell from your sections.
Skills and levels have nothing to do with this.
1) You can assign a number key from 1-8 while hovering on any item in your favorites menu.
EDIT:
This is not correct, "1 and 2 seem to be reserved for the left hand whereas 3-8 are for R hand or both hands." It's a preference.
END EDIT:
Once in battle you can quickly change weapon with just a number key. These are called HotKeys in the link Vlad 254 posted.
Now if I'm missing something here please let me know as I'd love to have the left hand more useful.
2) Keep in mind some merchants just can't be bothered with your junk and/or will only buy items that their shop specializes in i.e. potions or food or weapons/armour/metals. Merchant traders like Bits and Pieces will buy/sell anything so that's where you dump off your junk or your precious items.
At the bottom of the list of items (default shopkeeper) is the shop and to the right is your name. Click on your name then the backpack near the top for ALL your stuff or click along that line for sorted items. If you have SkyUI installed it's WAAAY better as you can sort groups by their weight/value/damage etc.
One last thing, watch for rings/boots/helmets etc. that raise your carry limit. And go visit the steed stone for a major boost to carry limit. Also there are mask/amulets/rings/potions you can wear when entering a shop to fetch better prices. You need gold, the more the merrier. I'm still new relative to most members on here, but when out in the wild I won't pick up anything unless it's worth more than 50 gold per lb. Of course there are exceptions (ingredients or something you really need) but you'll figure that out.
2. You NEED SkyUI.
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/17230
it's a 2 part install plus requirements
if you are new to modding you should read this guide and take the first 7 mods plus SKYUI

Favorites and quick menu/keys exist in vanilla, so no you don't NEED SkyUI for it, although it is highly suggested of course for other reasons.
There is no "Quick keys 1 and 2 are reserved for left hand 3-8 for right." that I've ever experienced. I use quick key 1 for my weapon as my "default" every time and it draws it to right hand with no issue. I believe it has to do with what you have assigned to it. A weapon will default to drawing to right hand, a shield to left (which I usually assign to key 2) is the most obvious example. I also always put my healing spell on key 8 and it actually defaults to replacing my shield (left hand) every time I've ever used it unless of course I double tap the key and then can dual cast it.
Ya, I guess I didn't explain that very well. Good info! Thanks. So when using favorites, it would seem Magic/shield by default draws to left hand and one handed weapons to right?
That's correct. A shield or spell when hotkey'd will be equipped on the left hand. A weapon will equip on the right. In vanilla this will cause you problems when you are trying to dual wield or dual cast.
It's been a while since I used vanilla, I am not sure if vanilla UI has Favorite Groups. SkyUI's Favorite Groups allow you to assign weapons to both hands, as well as spells to both hands, with some caveats, but it allows for more equip setups, which is why it's highly-recommended.
So Cindy.. confused yet? I bought this in 2012 played for awhile got bored, stopped playing in 2015 because of glitches and continued from that spot last fall. I learn something every day and the members on here are terrific as you've noticed. If you follow Vlad's post #8 it sets the game up nicely.
RE: SkyUI Here's a link to using groups:

Magic can go to either.
1. When I go to install, it gives me 3 location options - D:\programfiles(86), C:\programfiles(86), and C:\steamgames. I cannot put it on the C drive (small boot drive) but I don't see how to get it to go somewhere besides the program files area on my D:\ drive. I tried to add a different directory on the D drive as a Steam Library location and it says I'm not allowed 2 folders on the same drive...
2. Guide says to turn off automatic updates. I've looked at Steam settings and game properties and I see Auto-Update is 'on' and there are 3 approaches (update it, update when I run the game, update as a priority). I don't see a place to turn it off.
I guess I'm off to a great start here, eh? As always, thanks in advance...
