Assuming you mean without mods, in which case it's probably Illia.

None is my favorite. The others are combat idiots. standing directly between me and the target so I fill their backs with arrows instead of shooting the enemy. I can sneak through a room full of bandits and not attract any attention, while they draw mobs from the next room.

I don't use followers, not even custom ones. They just stand in the way. I will have Illia as a follower shortly and make her my steward for Goldenhills Plantation. Favorite follower: Serana, for as long as it lasts.

Vanilla? None. Beth is notorious for making bland companions, as opposed to Bioware, Obsidian, Larian, aside from a couple in Fallout 4. So they're just there as combat helpers with mediocre AI.

Modded, Inigo and Lucien are quite good, There is a dialogue mod that makes Serana quite interesting.

I dont use followers, as they generally are more of a hindrance. However, the correct answer is Serana.

I sometimes use Meeko with a couple of mods, otherwise none as the repetitive yapping and usual hindrance gets old really fast.
Vanilla, Meeko. Modded? Serana (SDA) and Meeko. I have yet to try Ashe and Remiel though.

Vanilla? None. The AI is utterly frustrating.

Now, modded I usually have either Serana, Sofia, Lucien, or Inigo.

Lydia.

I never understood the appeal of followers that will attack you if you commit a crime.

Generally if I am playing Vanilla, I do not use a follower since they are too needed and always getting in the way. Plus, it is difficult to be sneaky when Lydia or someone else is clomping around in their heavy boots and shouting "I am sworn to carry your burdens" or other such nonsense.

At the moment for my lightly modded game, I have Inigo as a faithful khajiit companion. Although I will admit that his feline attributes occasional cause me frustration when he refuses to move no matter what I try -- even tempting him with fresh fish does not always work. << Encountered the Broken Ore Grotto glitch but luckily searching the web presented several solutions which will be useful should he ever get stuck on the side of a mountain again and refuse to move. It was time consuming to gently nudge Inigo down the mountain until he finally agreed to walk by himself. >>

I used to like faendal at least until I married the girl he was after in a playthrough.

Yeah faendel is a creeper and a scumbag he doesn’t care she’s married he still stalks her.
My favourite follower in the game is Faendal as well.:starshine:

Always the one who can teach me skills and will give me my gold back afterwards.

So, in the beginning, it's often Faendal.

Vanilla Illia Modded Auri

Edit: honourable mention for Orpheus (modded)

Vanilla would be Serana and Lydia. Yes, the stalwart plodding packmule Lydia. I just like the nostalgic ones, which leads me to:

Sofia being my favorite modded follower. I used her a lot many years ago and now it's like adventuring with an old friend every time.
