Once the attack begins, there is a period of time (approximately 1 minute) until the glowing shield is disabled and Jyrik becomes vulnerable to attack. The player essentially must kite Jyrik until the shield is removed. This is a scripted event and cannot be bypassed (similar to over-killing Miraak during the Summit of Apocrypha quest).
Make sure you are waiting until the shield is disabled. If Jyrik appears to always have the shield even though Tolfdir has indicated the shield is down, you can grab the staff that is on the table and use it on the orb to remove the shield yourself.
I reloaded. I left to the previous "room." Attacked him with weapons and magic.
The glowing green "shield" is gone. I am actually doing damage to him. He is reduced to 0, goes down on one knee and in a minute he is back up with full hit points. OH... the staff on the shield. Was wondering why the arrow was appearing on the globe. I will try that. Thank you.
Edit. Well, the staff did nothing to the orb.
Since you said the shield is disabled and Jyrik is reduced to 1 HP, you could try opening the console, select Jyrik, then type:
disable <enter>
enable <enter>
You may need to try this at different times during the encounter. The disable/enable command could also be used on Tolfdir if he doesn't cast a spell at the orb.
You mentioned you tried the 'setessential' command. Did you enter the command as follows?
setessential <BaseID> <#>
# = Make NPC- mortal (0) / immortal(1)
or
setessential 0001BB28 0
EDIT: The Unofficial Patch does correct some bugs with this encounter.
It took setessential 0001bb28 (And I SWEAR it tells me the code is 0001BB27) and I finally killed the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I have been after the bastard since Saturday. Thank you muchly.
