How to downgrade the newest update to 1.6.353
I found this advice on Reddit for anyone who wants to downgrade their .exe if it automatically updated itself.

So in case you guys are wondering why your Skyrim won’t launch it’s cause Bethesda decided to push out an unannounced nothing update that just adds an extra option in the main menu and some fixes for foreign versions of the game, essentially ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up everyone’s mods. Anyway I saw this fix in the comments on the r/skyrimmods subreddit so big thanks to u/ContraBiscuits for this fix I/m essentially just copy pasting his fix on here in order to spread awareness.

Anyone that wants to downgrade back to AE from a few hours ago (1.6.353):

First type this into your web browser:

steam://nav/console

Then allow it to open steam client bootstrapper. Once the console window appears, type:

download_depot 489830 489833 4570833277049890269

Check the console for the location of the newly downloaded skyrimse.exe version 1.6.353. Then simply replace the exe in your game files with this one. Don’t know how well this will work but the game is at least launching for me so…

Edit: Should probably mention that I assume this only works for Skyrim Special Edition on Steam.

Hope this helps you guys out, I tried this fix for myself and everything seems to be working fine.

do you copy and paste it in and delete the current exc in their now ? sorry I am not very good with computers. any screen shots of this would be awesome

You can also use the unofficial downgrade patcher from nexus, it has an optional file to downgrade to the 1.6.353 version, you just run it and click patch

Yup delete the existing SkyrimSE.exe from the Skyrim folder in steamapps/common and paste in the downloaded one

I would not recommend this.

I did it a few days ago.

While your game will run and play seemingly fine, you will see problems with your mods even if you have not downloaded any new ones, or updated any of them already to work with the new version.

Some things that started happening for me:

- NPC t-posing more often
- Animals like bears and spiders “freezing” but still making sounds, floating across the ground, and being able to take damage and be killed (but still stuck in pose after death)
- mods such as the one that gives all Bosmer NPCs antlers, another that introduces lock variations, and some NPC replacers simply stopped working
- at random times, player character could equip weapons but then not attack with them for 30 - 60 seconds or until weapons had been re-equipped numerous times.
- some textures started to fail to load properly
- Maven Black-Briars name changed to Jarl Maven Black-Briar even though she a) was not the Jarl and b) I had completed the Stormcloak side of the civil war 20+ hours (real time) previously in the save.

Replacing the updated .exe with a pre-update .exe does NOT seem to be the “magic fix”. As suggested by other users on here, the update likely affected the master files for Skyrim and other game files as well.

So be warned: simply replacing the .exe will not do it. You will be able to launch and play the game using a non-updated SKSE, but you are likely to experience other issues.

yes I saw that YOU think thats the best way to go ? and old mods will stiil work ?

its a mod that's been downloaded by hundreds of thousands of people from the most popular mod hosting website that does check for viruses, I've also used the stuff myself multiple times across a long period of time and have never had anything odd happen like weird programs running or suddenly my accounts getting logged into or whatnot. You're allowed to not trust people and be paranoid/cautious, just saying it's trustworthy

So are your going to use the Unoffical downgrade patcher on Nexus then ? Most say that works the best and should not break your old mods. Curious what are you doing for your skyrim SE game then?

Although I guess they just released a small new update which changed the exe cause bethesda, so will need to wait for that version to get updated anyway, unfortunate. Shouldn't take too long if how fast he did it last time is any indication.

At this point, I’m going to go play other things and wait a few days/a week and then come back and check to see if all my mods that needed updates got them post-update.

OH so the downgrade patch on Nexus is not working yet for this latest update by Bethesda . I have the guys video pulled up from January when Bethesda messed everything up . Should I/ we wait ?
Broadcub Sep 20, 2022 @ 11:47am
I'd wait, the last update he did was the same day as the patch was released from bethesda, hopefully it'll be the same with this one

Pretty sure last I looked at the downgrader patch on Nexus a couple days ago it was taken down anyways.

Unless that was a different downgrader/it was temporarily taken down.
