Adding mods mid game is not usually advised. Try it and see. If it crashes then the answer is no.

If you’re adding a mod that just replaces the textures and adds some trees to Whiterun you should be okay, just make sure that you’re not in Whiterun when you install it. Sometimes mods which alter locations don’t behave nicely when you load a save in which you’re standing in the location that’s being altered.
