I've killed Paarthurnax once...
And I've felt so empty and guilty ever since, until I deleted my entire save afterwards and started over like it never happened.

The Blades, in comparison with other factions, is just entirely hollow. Building up an army of dragon hunters over time just feels like they were cherry picked from Oblivion heaven. Quest rewards are more intriguing than the steps required to complete it, and the rewards themselves are hyper-fixated on making dragons (and only dragons) easier to kill.

Let me reiterate. In order to even gain access to the Blades's organization. you need to have the absolute apathy to willingly murder the only dragon who has overcame his evil nature. The same dragon that helped you to save the entirety of Tamriel from being eaten. In all the 13 playthroughs where I've completed the main quest, I've only slain Paarthurnax once. Trust me, it's not something you'd forget doing again.

By his own admition, he has not fully overcame his nature. He states:

Dov wahlaan fah rel. We were made to dominate. The will to power is in our blood. You feel it in yourself, do you not? I can be trusted. I know this. But they do not. Onikaan ni ov dovah. It is always wise to mistrust a dovah. I have overcome my nature only through meditation and long study of the Way of the Voice. No day goes by where I am not tempted to return to my inborn nature. Zin krif horvut se suleyk. What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?

The urge to dominate is still there, he just suppresses it. But one day, he might not be able to overcome it. So while he is a good dragon at the moment, he may not stay that way. He still shouldn't be killed, but he does remain a potential threat for as long as he lives. He even admits the Blades are wise to not trust him.

in that respect human nature in itself is a threat to the world irl and game so to speak and everyone has potential for doing great harm though most of us choose not to or dont act or think of it or on it . even people whove done wrong can choose to change even if they are struggling with it - i agree with how blades need and want dragonborne to lead but then refuse any contact if wont do thier bidding should be otherway around or inbetween a lil at least . kick daff and old man curb and start a blades run by who was ment to the dragonborn though i dislike them almost fully from all eso games

The blades faction is just an alternative to the greybeards. They both exist to give you random generated quests that will get you words of power. Greybeards send you to dungeons with words of power, blades send you to dragon roosts with words of power (not as many as greybeards, but the trade off is you can send blades to aid you in battle and recruit NPCs as blades), and the two factions are mutually exclusive.

That's all they exist for, extra roleplaying opportunities.

I'm usually 50/50 in killing paarthunax or not. They both have valid points. Paarthunax was basically Adolf Hitler's right hand man, who most people wouldn't forgive if he was around today.

He says it's daily struggle to not fall to his nature of domination, while living in seclusion on a mountain.

Then the second alduin is defeated, he shows up with a bunch of dragons saying he's in charge and he's gonna go show all the rest of the dragons his peaceful ways of the voice (which a dragon debate is literally fighting eachother with words of power). Insert bender from Futurama when he becomes a wooden robot all about peace, ", we're gonna show the world our peaceful ways... By force!!".

If it's a daily struggle while being in seclusion, then going out and literally dominating other dragons would assuredly have him fall to his old ways and nature of *checks notes* domination.
I'll admit, I have done so too. I felt like **** after doing it the first time and I vowed never to do that again. I can kill any dragon, but if a dragon likes me, I will like it back.
If only, if only, there were... umm... mods that could allow the Dragonborn (player) to AVOID killing dear old wise mentor Paarthurnax..

I'm in my first run through. I tried avoiding the entire decision but was unable to. I chose to ignore the Blades' demand on the basis that I'm tired of this or that person ordering me do do something gruesome that they themselves won't do. So it's one more quest in my log that will remain forever because I can't accomplish the end of the quest.
Way back I used to just do a 50-50 coin flip whether or not he lives. Do the quest 100 times and the dilemma is no longer important.

Now I just use a mod and forget about it.
