(Like the story of Nocturnals Cowl, stolen by the grey Fox that book and story was an inspiration obviously to Mercer as well.) He also stole her skeleton key. Cut off her contact with the nightingales and was having a great time stealing anything he liked. Just that Maven was pressuring him about the thieves guild.
To be able to do steal the skeleton key without her knowledge and go on a crime spree developing his skills with it's inate abilities. Then to keep doing that without Nocturnal sending her agents after him. For Gallus and Karliah to not know that the sepulchure had been desecrated by Mercer. Several plot holes that you can drive a bus through.
But I'd consider he achieved more than he gets credit for.
I relate to what you're saying. I like salty people myself. I think what grates me about some of the rude people in the thieves guild is how it forces your lines and sets you up for them to hand you your ass: "Is there anything you don't charge for?". If I could have attitude back then I might get into the role play. But I must select that line from a list of one.
In fact, that's my complaint about the thieves guild all-around, (even though it's fun). It really forces your character to be a particular personality which makes it less re-playable. The dark brotherhood is the opposite, even though the quests are not as fun. You can play as any type, race, creature you want your character to be, as long as they're willing to murder for cash, (which, granted, irl would be a pretty defining attribute, but is kind of a nuance in Skyrim).
