Also, what about how people who do jobs for her make a "great deal of money"? The only job you do for her is the rat-infestation quest and last time I got, like, an iron sword with a cheesy enchantment, (15 points of shock damage). Worth about 150 septim to sell and I wouldn't fight a skeever with it. She pays like crap. She treats you like something she wishes she hadn't looked at before flushing. The only person who treats you worse is Mercer, but at least you get to kill him.

As far as hating her. YOur kinda suppose to. I mean unless you yourself are a legitimate criminal in real life its kinda assumed your going to hate her. even if you know you join the thieves guild.


She isnt a character that does bad things but has reasons you might look at as good intentions or atleast not evil intentions. for example robin hood. steals but has motivations that would be considered good. Stealing from the rich to give to the poor for example. She isnt that type of character. So your suppose to hate her. If you liked her as a person. I would kind a thnk your also the type of person nobody would like.



As far as the rewards you got for the 1 job you did specifically for her being crap. True but this is mostly a design flaw by the developers. I mean the rewards you get the 1 and only time you do a job specifically for her. I agree those rewards are crap and it doesnt fit the narrative that people who work for her make alot of money. But I believe this just to be an example of the devs not properly designing the rewards to match the narrative that those that work for her make alot of money.


I say this because the entire thieves guild continued existance is basically because of Maven Black Briar. Its heavely hinted that she throws jobs their way. by heavily hinted i mean they flat out showed during the thieves guild quest line she gives orders to the thieves guild. and they do it pretty much no questions asked. She also protects them from persecution. As she owns the town basically.


Remember the thieves guild luck had dwindled to nothing due to mercer. This likely would have been their downfall if it wasnt for maven. She most likely was the reason the thieves guild didnt disband and definetly the reason Riftens guards didnt raid the ratway and go to the thieves guild headquarters to arrest them all. Make no mistake everyone knew where there hideout was.


So the thieves guild no doubtedly made alot of money due to their allegiance with maven. enough that they have been able to surive during the time their luck ran out due to mercer.



The devs should have given better rewards for the 1 quest you specifically for her.

I tend to side with the imperials in the civil war but the fact that maven becomes the jarl is, honestly, the one reason i consider switching sides. If a reunited empire wasn't part of my character backstory / goals, i would probably join the stormcloaks just cause of her.

Follow up: As for the rewards, you honestly are "well paid" compared to other stuff you can acquire at the same level. It's a leveled reward and it's always enchanted. Kill random bandit X and the value of the items you loot off his corpse are less than the value of the item she gives you.

An enchanted iron sword is not crap when compared to the hide armor / unechanted iron swords that typically drop at the same level.

On the topic of thieves guild: Why does Karliah shoot me? Her explanation doesn't make sense. If she had shot Mercer then I wouldn't be in any danger, so it wasn't to save me. To take me out of the way? But she knows Mercer is formidable. She doesn't even want to fight him later without first recruiting two more nightengales to help. She also needs to capture him. Why not shoot him, then fight me if I attack? I'm the one without the magic key that makes him such a deadly opponent.

You were in the way. She couldn't get a clear shot at mercer because you were in front of him. That's why mercer told you to lead. If she had waited, she risked getting cornered between the two of you.

Basically, there was no way to let you into the room and still have a shot at capturing mercer. If she let you into the room, mercer would hang back until you and her got into combat, then he kills you both.

She opted for a tactical retreat, hoping to keep you alive and get you to help her.

That sounds right as far as the game explanation. There are several issues regarding the size and layout of the room you entered, as well as her position off-to-the-side that doesn't fit, but I guess it's game_writing =/= game_implementation.

I'd love a post-civil war quest 'Burning the Blackbriar' that was an Oceans 11 or The Sting pastiche to destroy the clan.

I really want to see her and Sibbi in matching, dank, uncomfortable jail cells. The only half-decent one is Ingun and I'm not sure but that she's a serial killer in waiting.

you have a certain god complex in fallout new vegas, you hate someone? you kill them you can alter almost everything even if sometime it get you out of the game, in skyrim there so much you cant change its kinda sad, you cant even destroy the thieves guild or yes the briars you are just an actor in a static setting

Run a mod called OBody.

Make her huge with preset from Nexus called Whole Lotta Rosie. ;)

:3 in this game, i kind of liked anyone that was an a-hole, but still not hostile/kill worthy. (like maven). i'm a sucker for rude/full-of-piss-&-vinegar types though. the sweet-bubblegum npcs are the ones that grind my gears for some reason idk...

I don't hate Maven, don't like her tho.
But you gotta respect the fact she basically runs Riften, without (too) much bloodshed.

She's a cut-throat business woman through and through.

Mercer though, is a whole different story.
