I found the chest at the bottom of the steps to the main door. I tried to drop them next to the chest and also put them in the chest like I put things in the chest at my house. I can not. I'm I missing something?

You don't drop anything. That won't place them in the chest. You need to select the chest (to "open it) Now you'll see the chest's contents on one side (there's nothing) and your character's inventory on the other. Go to "Miscellaneous" in your character's inventory on the far right and then select the supplies. They will be transferred to the chest.
