Remember that they helped you to search for Alduin for you to defeat him.
They're half good and bad like anyone else.

Kill The Blades[www.nexusmods.com]
The second comment in the posts section says it works for Special Edition and you just need to wait till after you kill Alduin.
there is another if you don't wish to try it out in your Special Edition game
Kill The Blades as Thalmor[www.nexusmods.com]

Hope that helps.

That sounds risky but appreciate the help. and for the thalmor? well... screw them... i think i'll just leave everything be!

Don be skerd, it just says you can kill them if they ever get defeated and are crawling on the ground. So if you don't use them as companions, they won't die until you want them too.

alright then... i will give it a try. AND i will post the result if i don't forget to! thank you for the encouragement!

This mod makes both Delphine and Esbern protected from game start (can be risky). Best to use a mod that changes their essential state to protected after completing The Fallen and/or Season Unending.

You can always make them protected or remove the essential flag for them using the console.

well, it's not always so cut-and-kill... one issue is while you can 'setessential <baseid> 0' for any character, anyone that's part of a quest will have quest aliases, and if those are set protected/essential, they're unkillable still, since highest level of protection "wins". you need a modder who's aware of the distinction, and those first ones that warmed listed seem better than this little stub mod, actually.

if you're worried, use a mod manager's profile or instance feature, if it wrecks things, go back to your other profile / instance. that's exactly what they're for.

Correct. DA! Delphine and Esbern are marked as essential from game start, but they are also constantly part of the main questline. As long as both are an alias in the main questline, their status will always be essential, unless their status is changed to protected or none inside a quest. Don't only look at the quest you see in your inventory, there is also a quest that manages the complete questline (MQ00). This quest runs from game start and never stops. Whatever mod has made it possible to kill them, I wonder if that's permanent.
