Survival mode questions
I just started playing this game and get past the beginning - getting to the first town.

1. In survival mode i read that you will always be cold and suffer cold penalties no matter how much you have on - especially early in game - true?

2. Is there a way to increase your 150 lbs load? That is a small amount especially if you are using heavy armor.

Thanks in advance!

Your options in the beginning to deal with cold are limited. But later on, there are food and potions that help. Your race will also play a part.

You increase your carry capacity the same way as you always do - put points into stamina when you level up. Each time you do you will gain 5 points of additional capacity.

Thanks, I've never played a Elder game and bought this one a few months ago and finally got into it.

i only play survival mode and generally that means that i wear a full set of fur armor the entire game, carry around 8 torches, and keep 5 or 6 hot meals on me. it's manageable but be wary of fighting frost dragons or ice mages in the snow. they can make quick work of you.

You can increase carry weight by increasing stamina when you level up and they are yellow potions that incerase carrying capacity for a limited time and on the pickpocket skill tree i think there is a perk that increases you're carry weight and i think there is also armour with echantments that increase carry weight.

If you have a version of the game with all the CC, you can craft or buy backpacks that will increase your carry capacity and potentially give minor benefits. It's pretty rude that they sold Camping and Backpacks separately from Survival when they're built around making it more manageable and didn't include them in the update that made Survival free.

Otherwise, either take Stamina levels, take Extra Pockets, brew carry potions, or find/craft +Carry weight items. Keep a bottle of Honningbrew Mead along so you can trade it during a random encounter with 3 revelers for a +carry weight amulet. Also bring a follower and have them share the weight.

Oh didn't think of the hot meals - thanks!

It's important to note that your warmth rating only slows down the rate at which you start to freeze, and does not stop it entirely. The Clear Skies shout will also make an area warmer for a time, slowing down the rate at which you freeze.

With this in mind I'll add a point the others haven't mentioned: Horses

Horses won't be slowed down by the cold, and move faster than you do. A genuine lifesaver in the coldest regions.

You can also safely travel over-encumbered on horseback. This is based on a modded game with a few patches but I think this is vanilla Survival Mode behaviour. It's not much use in a dungeon of course but it's a useful trait all the same.

You can also use horses to traverse freezing water safely: You won't freeze at all.

Finally: If you happen to have Pets of Skyrim, Hilda the Goat. She has up to 140 carry weight. And can be summoned at any point freely. Given you can also have two pets in tow, the skeever from the same thing has another 40 points of inventory, and can be summoned the same way.

EDIT: Also the Steed Stone. In Survival it only grants 50 points of carry weight, not 100. But it still makes the armour you are wearing weightless. Very important for heavy armour users.
