You cant buy a Torch ....
Skyrim, a really nice game, cool mod support etc ..

anfd then you play it the first time, set up a decent difficulty, lightining mods, .. you run around and soon you realize its pretty dark in the dungeons.

ok, cool, so you really need lights, right?

but where the ♥♥♥♥ doyou get get them? in all seriousness, one of the most BASIC things in every fantasy world cannot be bought?

you need to rely on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ magic spell for something as basic as some lightning (even worse) you need to "cast that spell every 60 minutes

or collect a torch in some places you really dont know about when you play the game the first time

i really cannot believ that lack of the most basic things in skyrim, this is dumb beyond imagination

Guards walk around at night with torches and in dungeons the torches on the walls can be picked up and i think imperial legion patrols carry torches aswell this is a few ways I think you can get torches from.

Why would you want to use a torch in dungeons with enemies? Any enemy would detect you on the spot!

right. every guard in skyrim carries a torch at night.

but i have to pickpocket them to get torch ? you realize fpr yourself that this is unworthy for a hero with a lawful atttude, it doesnt even make sense.

or find torches in dungeons (why would i go there without a torch in the first place).

so i, as the dragnborn start stealing torches from guards, since there is NO OTHER WAY (other than grabbing what you find in other dungeons, mines at walls) to get one?

it dosent make the slightest sense --- how long is that game around now?

why would i crawl around in the darkness? ever been in a cave without light?

oh my god, seriously --

i can buy daggers, and swords, and warhammers .... any whatnot ... but torches, which are everywhere in the world, carried, by everyone, cannot be obtained at any merchant? or crafted, or wahtever?

(ofc you would have to make the buying price MUCH higher then selling price)

or sell me a lantern for good bucks, or whatever, which make sense on an intuitivly acceptable level.

The reason you can't buy torches is actually kinda funny; it goes deeper than they're just not put in merchant inventories.

It's because they're not a normal item- they're a Light object, the usually invisible markers placed in the content tools and used to make something like a candle appear to give off light.
It is possible however to give Light objects an actual model, and there's a special flag plainly called "This Light Can Be Carried" to make it something an entity can carry in their inventory

However, being a "light" object, they don't fall under any of the categories that a Merchant-capable NPC uses to determine what they'll trade. (Weapon, Apparal, Ingestible, Alch, etc.)

Embershard Mine (the first dungeon most people run across), has several several torches you can take off the walls.

There are several locations where you can obtain torches from the walls. However, torches are not infinite, they do run out after a bit, so you'd still be better off getting the spell if you need light, use a staff if you don't want to use the actual spell.

You might think it's dumb, but there isn't ever a need for torches in the base game, you chose to make it darker with a mod, so use another mod for light, I recommend wearable lanterns.

If memory serves...you can't buy pickaxes and woodcutter's axes either...

Nah, you can buy those. I think blacksmiths sometimes have them.

When I see an enemy with a torch or lantern, I know exactly where I have to shoot my arrow!

You have no trouble with the fact you are absorbing dragon souls, but find it unbelievable that you can not buy a torch.
TAGma Nov 20, 2024 @ 5:13pm
There are several basic items that for whatever reason cannot be bought or crafted, the only way to find them is by looting.

Torches, woodcutting axes, firewood, pickaxes, fur armor, etc.

True, they don't have much use in full-vanilla game, but it would nice if 'Survival Mode' had added them to the shops/crafting recipes.

What would be the point in Mage Light and Candle Light spells if torches were even more convenient to acquire?

There's already very little use for them in the vanilla game, so meh

there are some mods that add lanterns to the game , both as a carryable torch substitute and extra lamp posts along key roads . this combined with a dungeon darkening mod can make delving into dwemer ruins ect very interesting.

tiz a moot point fir me, constant user of Ourims aquatic escape, invisible, breath underwater AND night sight, with the Quiet casting perk, I can cast it when-ever, where ever, works even better if ya a Kajiit, natural night sight an all
