Not exactly. They can bring them back whenever if they wanted to and go from there.
There are all sorts of theories out there, good theories and bad, but the one thing we know for certain is all the theories out there are going to be better than what Bethesda will decide happened.
Hopefully his successor post-TESVI will respect that, because at this point no canon explanation will please everybody.
Personally, I always liked the theory that they were transported to another plane of existence outside of Mundus and they’re effectively trapped there. They’re still alive, and maybe even rebuilt a civilization on this other plane, but despite their efforts to return to Mundus, haven’t figured out a way yet.
Dimensional travel by accident. Is my guess.
