- Legacy of the Dragonborn (for reasons explained above)
- Heavy Armory, Royal Armory, and all of PrivateEye’s packs except Imperial Silver (couldn’t understand the point of this one) and Elven Steel (Altmer actually avoid using steel weapons and armor because they believe it’s inferior, they prefer using moonstone and glass).
These weapon packs are great. Not only do they expand your choices with things like mauls, clubs, short swords, halberds, spears, quarterstaves, and short spears for all weapon categories but they also fill in some gaps in certain sets (like the Forsworn and Imperial sets).
They’re also designed in such a way that they visually fit into the vanilla sets and look entirely as if they were made by BGS and included in the vanilla game or added by DLC.
- All of the “quest expansion”, “for good guys”, and “Destroy the DB/Thieves Guild” mods made by the likes of Jayserpa and other people.
I don’t like being forced to commit an action that doesn’t fit with my character’s moral alignment for sake of completing a quest.
I also don’t like essentially being unable to collect cool stuff for the LOTD museum because it doesn’t fit my character to join the DB or TG or commit wrongdoings.
This collection of mods largely resolves that by offering alternative routes to complete those kind of quests or collect stuff otherwise locked behind joining/helping the DB and TG.
- BS Bruma
You’ll see me not speaking very highly of the BS squad on here in relation to the progress/status of their full projects, but they DID at least get this one out the door and it’s pretty well made and lots of fun to explore and quest in this snippet of Cyrodiil.
- Xavbio’s retextures
For almost 12 or 13 years aMidianborn’s retexture of vanilla weapons and armor was the best. They kept the original designs, styles, and colors but were crisper looking and of much higher quality than what we originally got.
Xavbio came along about a year ago and started doing his own retextures and they’re even better than aMidianborn’s. You’ll find yourself a lot more keen on using vanilla weapons and armor again with his versions installed and he even went on to cover a number of the game’s most popular mods.
AND he’s still working on more stuff. I think he’s got a whole clothing retexture in the oven so we can finally retire Rustic Clothing.
- Mysticism and all of Direnni’s spell packs.
Mysticism provides a lite overhaul of the vanilla magic system and helps it out where it needs it most, while Direnni’s spell packs add in some really cool new spells and magic types to better make your magic using character a bit more “specialized” and unique.
- JK’s various redesigns and outskirts.
JK manages to bring fresh air into the places we’ve seen countless time. He doesn’t go overboard in changing the layout or original vision for the various towns, cities, and interiors but he makes plenty of additions. Some people don’t like his heavy use of clutter but I feel like it makes these places feel alive and lived in.
- Character Creation Overhaul
I was never really keen on Skyrim’s “be a master of everything” style that just tossed away any semblance of class building and specialization.
CCO fixes that by letting you choose your birth sign and class type and attributing various benefits to them along with your race.
It doesn’t dramatically change how character creation and skills work but it’s just nice to make a character whose starting skill levels are reflective of what kinda character you want to be.
I know there’s more but that’s enough for now
