Skyrim Special Edition & SKSE Help?
I recently got the urge to delve back into the world of the Elder Scrolls, and I have seen that the Nexus itself is still quite active with new mods coming out every day.

So, knowing I haven't truly played the game in the last year, I went and updated SKSE64 to the newest version ( version 2.2.6 )

However, now I am having a problem -- It is apparently detecting that I have the "latest version" of Skyrim Special Edition installed,
version 1.6.640

This is causing me now to receive an error and the script extender will not launch the game as it should. Both are updated to the newest versions as far as I can see.

The full error I am getting is the following:
"You are using Skyrim version 1.6.640, which is out of date and incompatible with this version of SKSE64 (2.2.6). Update to the latest version."

Can anyone help me with this issue? Do I just have to wait for SKSE to update again? Is there an update my version of Skyrim is missing? Do I need to bite the bullet and buy the Anniversary Edition just to be safe?

The current version of the game is actually 1.6.1170. The SKSE64 version you installed is for the current game version and not the version you have. You would have to update the game to continue using the latest version of SKSE64. If you truly want the current game, I recommend a full clean reinstall using the known guides and/or YouTube videos.

If your intent is to play the version you have because of mod's already installed, you will need to uninstall the SKSE64 files you just dropped in the folder and reinstall an older version.

You can find it at the SKSE silverlock website -
https://skse.silverlock.org/

Locate the 'Archive Builds' link and sort the date twice. You are looking for the following file for game version 1.6.640:

Have you updated your skyrim to the latest version?

If the current game version is 1.6.1170, how is it that Steam does not detect this?
Where am I to download this version? I'd rather update the game and keep things moving forward - I'm already updating everything else as it is.

Some have experienced an issue with Steam not indicating that the game requires an update. This may be due to an issue with the app manifest file. If you want to continue, it is a good idea to start with a fresh install. That way no hidden files cause an issue after the update.

Try the more comprehensive version of verifying your game files detailed here. As Nabinkemper said, sometimes Steam's configuration files show your game as current when it actually isn't.

I went back and started taking closer looks at the idea of the game itself not being "up to date," somehow, and I did eventually find an answer that now lets me play the game. I don't remember when but I had 2 copies of the game installed -- one on my internal storage, and one on my external drive.

I deleted the internal game, ensured the SKSE files were properly copied (in this case I think I made an extra few copies of it, and at this point I'm afraid to touch it), and now I was able to get into the game.

Appreciate everyone's input!
