Is a mod manager REQUIRED?
I did some light modding for Skyrim off of nexus, (race menu, alt start, argonian fins. That's really it.) And after putting them into the mods file for Skyrim, it simply never worked. I opened the game and was greeted by the same "Hey, you, you're finally awake" I've been hearing for YEARS on my ps4, and I was then forced to make due with the same old customization screen that's gotten boring over the years. I couldnt even make my argonian look like a fish. Do I need vortex to mod this game? Like, NEED it?

Vortex or Mod Organizer 2. Someone will copy tutorial that is pinned on these forums, GamerPoets on youtube is good for Vortex/Mod Organizer 2 and other mod tutorials. You can skip using them but I dont think its worth trying to mod without them even doing small setups. A lot of mods have loose files or other non plugin files so you cant disable them easily without using a mod manager like vortex or Mod Organizer 2. (the files for most mods are stored outside the game then virtually moved so game seems ones enabled as being installed)

Yeah just refresh I added more in edit but like I said there is a guide pinned and gamerpoets in my experience has good tutorials even if they are few.

The actual reason they probably werent loading is plugins being disabled they need to be manually activated when turned on. Bethesda has a way of doing it ingame but the UI for mods in Skyrim is horrible beyond imagining insanely slow its like 100 times faster to just hard exit game and use another program. Also last I checked engine fixes has a bug that disable all plugins over and over with bug fix in comments of that mod.

Do I have to do it in the console? (I accidentally pressed ~ while trying to open up the tab menu in a panic during a fight with a dragon so I could use potions, and promptly got deep fried.)

No console is just for console commands and seeing id's of stuff in the game. Was talking about creations menu where you can edit load order but would advice vortex or mo2 (mod organizer).

Required? No?

Extremely very strongly recommended? Yes.

If you're just doing light modding and want to quickly plug and play and have mods that won't have any conflicts with each other, Vortex is probably best for you.

If you want to do anything above that and want more control about your load order and how mods interact with one another, Mod Loader 2 is probably more recommended.

You're wrong. The vortex allows you to control absolutely everything.
