I opened the game and the game immediately prompted me to download the CC content. No logging in, no clicking on any menu. It just popped up and downloaded.

That's interesting, i've heard both ways from people, some had to go through the club, and you two had it default.

if you upgrade, when you launch it there is a "thank you for purchasing" at the menu screen, which on clicking to close it downloads all the cc content. and its rather slow as their servers are getting hit hard today (not any excuse though, they knew this would happen).

This is what my game did as well so I guess it's all good to go.

To be fair, they don't actually need them as they really aren't used too much, this is one of the rare occasions that they're under actual pressure. T'would be a waste of money. Same with Steam and any other company that has servers.

No. You have to download them in CC and then on exit of CC game will reboot itself to make certain changes and enable the files you have just downloaded.

For me the game prompted me to download the creation club content when i opened the game (i did not need to actually enter creation club). I clicked ok (or similar) and it downloaded all of it one by one (or rather unlocked it) and then rebooted the game (again without ever entering creation club).

No i didnt have to go to Creation Club or sign into anything at all.
I just started the game & there was a Thank You message with a download button.

Correct. They need you to register. The information on the Steam store page is incomplete. If you don't accept their user agreement, you cannot access their content. You're to accept the Creation Club agreement and give them your e-mail address, or you are being denied from accessing the Creation Club content.
