How to go fishing?

I bought the fishing rod and Whiterun fishing map from the Riverwood trader, but I don't know how to use the fishing rod. When I equip it, it acts like a sword does. What are the steps to go fishing?

fishing you are worried about fishing!! just see whats going on

I did not upgrade my game so what I write is what I have read from Bethesda. You can go fishing only in some dedicated area (check the map you recieved upon purchasing your rod). Got to the said area and you'll see a basket with fishes that where you can use your rod.

If you're still in Riverwood, go to the bridge but don't cross it. Down by the water is a book, fishing supplies, a fishing pole, and a basket of fish. Equip the fishing rod and click on the fishing supplies. See screenshot.
